This is the most wonderful television story of the ancient histories yet. Here are the reasons:

1) Unlike many prior feature films and TV series, this does not take Julius Caesar's power as given. Pharsalus, the battle which guaranteed his power, is not a footnote but a crucial historical moment which is given its proper dues here. So are many other details.

2) The deviousness and machinations which were so much a part of Republican-Imperial Rome are left intact. Although it cannot compare with "I Claudius", the series certainly does an excellent job getting close.

3) The sexual scenes and violence are not overdone. Anyone who is aware of the frescoes at Pompeii will know that sex and sexuality were important features of Roman culture. If it strikes you as a "soft porn extravaganza" (Philip Shepherd's comment) then remember that Rome was, at many times, a hard porn extravaganza. See the Penthouse film 'Caligula' and the novels of Mary Renault for other attempts at making us come out of our Victorian shell - long overdue in my opinion.

4) The acting is superb. Absolutely first class. See it for yourself.

5) Much research has clearly gone into the finer details. Notice that the ancient hairstyles are copied. The clothing also appears authentic (no off-the-rack yuppie ripoffs here). Ancient military, surgical, and cosmetic products have also been replicated well.

6) The film corrects many of our misconceptions. Though we may recall, with fondness, the fine nobility of Shakespeare's 'Antony and Cleopatra' this film provides a much-needed revision of these characters' identities. Antony is a thuggish brute and Cleopatra a coquettish nymphomaniac. There is nothing surprising here except the breathtaking audacity in making it plain. Wow!

7) The series does not fall into the trap of making the stories a purely upper-class affair. Much of it must be, if only because the ancient histories adopt the same approach. Yet a lot of the action takes place at the level of the common people. This too is quite revolutionary for a drama of this type.

8) Quite a few different scriptwriters and directors have been involved. They seem to change from episode to episode. The strength of this series clearly results from this inclusive, all-embracing approach.

If there are weaknesses, they lie in the slightly restrictive depiction of Rome as a city. At its height, Rome was a giant metropolis. This series makes it feel more like a provincial city than an imperial capital. That said, there's not much else to complain about and a huge amount to enjoy. High praise! Applause! Accolades! Bona Dea, please let the series continue right through the Julio-Claudian era - and beyond!

  Fathers Day Present

As Fathers Days approached i naturally started to panic, what do i get him this year from the kids? I decided to get Rome, he likes history and boring stuff like that so this i thought would be ideal. I had no interest in watching this so you can imagine the dread when he said "lets watch it together", we did and i was spectacularly surprised it was incredible! i couldn't get enough of it! The cast are excellent and the sets and scenery are stunning, the story is partly historically correct but the focus is not Julius Caesar but two soldiers and their lives, adventures and unlikely friendship. The series tries to convey the conditions and social structure of Rome during the time of Julius Caesar around 52BC and it does so superbly, i would highly recommend this to anyone just give it a go you will love it!Running time is 595 mins and is certificate 18 there are 12 episodes sptread over 6 discs and an hour of previously unseen footage. I just hope series 2 is just as good.

Sex, violence, politics - what more could you want? Funny, exciting, moving, atmospheric and well paced and although there are many characters in the story, not too many to keep track of (and there's a handy pull-out showing you who's-who, anyway). The true story of the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, with all the intrigue and drama you could want.

This series is great. It's a little off with history, but the costumes, settings and acting is great. It's one of the best TV series of all times.

History made real, following both the two ordinary soliders who are caught up in the struggles and politics of Rome. Even the wealthy families who are more about politics are shown as people with failings whose personalities lead them to commit acts which change the outcomes of the lives of citizens and the empire of Rome. Keeps you watching to see what happens next. Hughly enjoyable.

I caught the first couple of episodes of Rome when it was shown on the beeb but missed the rest.I came across the dvd box set on ebay, whilst browsing, and bought it at a very reasonable price.
I thought it was a fantastic series that had me hooked though all 12 episodes.Full of great characters, great plot and intrigue and best of all SEX.
The ending left the door open for a second series,I can't wait.
This was indeed another great bargain that I found on e-bay.

Enjoyed the tv series so much had to buy this to watch at my leisure. This was better made than most Hollywood films, the actors were first class and the storyline gripping. Added bonus for me my partner missed a few episodes but the ones he did see made him very affectionate.

A super series which is good to have on DVD...it helps you catch up on the bits you missed first time around. Some of the story lines stretch credibility rather too far... for example the part about who really sired Caesar's son with Cleopatra!!(a night of lust with a legionary soldier) However, things like this may be forgiven when one looks at the overall spectacle of the series. A super cast, well acted and stage sets so believable you can almost feel the dirt, grime and political intrigue on the streets of Rome. James Purefoy is a delight as Mark Anthony and the strigil scene is a bonus... More Please!!

  ROME Series 1 (HBO)

I liked the series when it was first shown on TV.

This boxset contains all the extra footage not shown on TV, which made it so much easier to follow the storyline and explained a number of things which the TV series had skipped over.

Good value for the price given that there are 5 DVD's plus the "behind the scenes" DVD.

Having watched the series on these DVD's, I realised how poor the original edited version for TV was.

A really exciting series about the Roman empire. Looking not just at Ceaser but two characters (soldiers) one who is straight down the middle the other a lovable rogue.
It has everything you want from wild sex scenes, fighting and comedy.
I did not sleep much with this series as I had to keep watching episode after episode.

realistic life of everyday folk as well as the rich and infamously known in roman times, excellently portrayed and acted, well paced story line keeping up interest with an edge of seat finale. I absolutely loved it, the dvd enables me to watch it repeatedly so that I can take in all the characters that are so rich and diverse, one viewing only cannot do this series justice it deserves. This is the first time I have liked a series enough to go on and buy the dvd.

  Rome series one DVD
Review created: 05/07/07

I watched the first series of Rome when it first came to the TV last year. I found the series very gripping and full of colourful characters. The story is not only down to earth but not afraid to cover the deborched goings on during that era. Not to mention the cruelty and fighting. It makes the Roman empire come to life and the set having 12 episodes to view, many hours of enjoyment. I decided to buy that particular copy because of the price, it was less that half the normal retail price. The thing I didnt like about it was I didnt know when the next series was going to start, but that problem has been solved by the new series on BBC2 Weds and Sundays each week.
