Well everybody knows and agrees that Rocky was a great film, even winning the best picture oscar back in 1976. But many feel that as the films went on, they became worse and worse until by the 3rd and 4th sequels it was a bit of a joke. Well I disagree.
Rocky 1 and 2 are relatively similar films, where Balboa is living in the same area, without much money or fame. These are certainly the best two films in terms of quality with more realistic story lines and better dialougue. They chart Rockys rise from a poor club fighter to heavyweight champoin of the world. They also focus strongly on his relationship with Adrienne who he depends on to fight, especially in 2, where he only begins real training when she tell him to!

Then we move on to three, which is certainly the link between the older and later rocky films. The entertainment value is certainly increaed, although at the hands of some of the aspects that made the first two films so good. Still, you can't help supporting Rocky all the way through as the good-bad guy roles are takin to the extremety with him and Clubber Lang(Mr T)After this, we reach 4, which in my opinion is probably the most entertaining film of the lot, with Rocky given many reasons to hate his opponent, not least because he is Russian at the height of the cold war(maybe a little dated now). The training sequences in Russia are superb, and the fight is very well done as with all of the films.

Rocky 5 however, as I'm sure many fans will agree is easily the weekest film here as Rocky is forced to retire and trains up a young prodigy who soon turns on him with the lure of money that Rocky cannot give him. A poor conclusion to a great series, and with Rocky 6 due out soon, i just hope that can be a more fitting end.

I caught on to the whole Rocky spectacular when I started seeing my boyfriend who loves Rocky. I bought him this set for his birthday and he insisted that I watch them all with him! He converted me to his faith!

Rocky.....this film is great! What's great about it for women is probably the romance between Rocky and Adrienne which is so simple and pure but so heartfelt you really begin to care about them. She's smart but shy and he's not so smart but a tough guy. What woman wouldn't want to be wooed by the delectable Rocky wearing a white vest, bulging arms on display? As for the boxing that's also great and Stallone delights as the Italian Stallion long shot who just wants to take his chance against Apollo Creed. The film is dark and gloomy in places but it's got a nice feel to it.
Rocky II....starts off where Rocky left off with Rocky and Apollo battered and bruised but definately not wanting a rematch. Rocky goes back to his old life and marries Adrienne who soon becomes pregnant. Rocky finds that he can't find work anywhere but on Adrienne's insistence he refuses to fight. This all changes however and Rocky and Apollo square up for their rematch which is compelling and exciting. Personally I feel that the second is equal to, if not better than the first and has a great scene with Rocky and his mentor Mickey.
Rocky III....Rocky III demonstrates Rocky's life as a Heavyweight champion. He is now rich and unstoppable...or so he thinks. That is until he comes across Clubberlang who is the newest fighting machine in the boxing world. Rocky's world is shattered when his mentor Mickey suffers a heart attack and dies. It is up to Apollo to help him discover the Eye of the Tiger which he has now lost. The end of the film sees him fighting the rather unlikeable Clubberlang. Personally, I felt that this film was not one of the better films in the anthology but it has a great training sequence with Apollo on the beach. Check out their training gear!
Rocky IV....Rocky has beaten some of the best and he and Apollo are now nearing retirement. Apollo and he appear in a staged boxing fight where they meet the giant, robot-like Ivan Drago from Russia. What was supposed to be an entertaining boxing match soon changes into tragedy as Apollo is struck down and killed by the mighty Drago. Rocky takes up the challenge of going to Russia to fight Drago against the wishes of Adrienne. His training is intense and brutal and includes him running in the snow up a mountain. The film was made during the Cold War era so the viewer can't help but feel that there is a certain anti-Russian feeling to it. However, the fight at the end is good although perhaps the ending is a little corny. I would recommend this film but it lacks the quality of story that the first two films had.
Rocky V....Rocky has now retired and returns to Philadelphia to live a normal life. Unfortunately Rocky being Rocky, nothing is ever that simple and he takes on an understudy who he tends to appreciate and spend time with more than his son. The film examines Rocky's personal relationships and he comes to accept that boxing is not who he is anymore. The film ends with a scrap in the street with the very man he has trained and mentored. It's a great way to end the anthology with Rocky returning to his roots.

I now await the rumoured Rocky VI with bated breath......

Why I Brought The Rocky DVD Box Set?
Review created: 04/08/06
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This Rocky DVD box set is the best thing out for Rocky fans, it contains all the films and an extra dvd full of the out takes and things you won't see normally.

The seller was very helpful and it was posted quickly and the transaction went very well. There were others on there but this was a good price as it's around £35-£45 in the shops if you can find one.

So all in all if you like the Rocky films or know anyone who does buy this for them for christmas as they will be over the mooon!

Live Life! Alex

My 8 year old son has just started his first boxing lessons and absolutley adores the Rocky films. Rather than just buy him one of the five films i decided to get the full lot and couldnt think of anywhere better to look than ebay. Immediately we came across the full box set still brand new too. He was absolutley over the moon only problem is now we have to watch Rocky practically all of the time....I would recommend ebay before any shops especially at the bargain prices!!!

My experience has not stopped me making other purchases.

  Rocky Anthology (John G. Avildsen)

I remember watching this film in the 1970's and a few more times over the years and love the first 2 rocky films. I didn't like the 3 and 4th films that much because I felt that they taken the Rocky story to far. I was very suprised that they made another Rocky B film.

If you haven't watch these film's yet, you must WATCH these films. I would recommend these films. I hope you enjoy the films.
