Road to Perdition romanticizes gangland Chicago, but no more so than other films set in the same period. And, like almost every movie about the mob, this one deals with themes of family, loyalty, and betrayal - albeit without the intensity of some of the great ones (The Godfather, Goodfellas). As was the case in American Beauty, Mendes illustrates how accomplished actors will respond to an assured director. Serious movie-goers embarking upon this journey will find that Road to Perdition leads to a satisfying destination. Thanks for looking.

Forrest Gump meets James Bond !

Great film, starring Tom Hanks, as a mob hitman that falls out of favour with his boss through no fault of his own. It's a story of revenge and also coming of age, as Tom's character bonds with his son.
The bad guy is played by new Bond Daniel Craig, and his dad is Paul Newman, so not a bad cast either. Well acted and a good story which carries you through to a slightly predictable ending, although with a final twist.

  Gripping gangster film.
Review created: 25/03/09

An enthralling movie. Great cast (Tom Hanks, Daniel Craig, Paul Newman, Jude Law), beautifully shot, just the right amount of action and a good storyline. I found it more watchable than other better known gangster movies.

Not the best movie about the mob, but a good addition to any mob movie collection. Visually very appealing, I love the climax scene in the rain, and Paul Newman is awesome as always.

Liked it far more than I thought I would!!

I'll be totally honest. I bought this because it has Daniel Craig in it. I don't like Tom Hanks, but was willing to put up with that just for a film with the blond Bond in it.

What a pleasant surprise!! It was a superb film, really gripping. On top of that it was very stylishly filmed, all in sepia and rain-grey tones, very atmospheric. They also went to enormous lengths to find parts of Chicago unchanged since the 1930s.

I even enjoyed Tom Hanks. In fact apart from The Terminal, which was superb, this was the best Tom Hanks film I have seen.

The real treat thought was Daniel Craig. He played the unhinged and spoiled brat killer son of a crime boss very well indeed!

Tom Hanks at his best, again.
Review created: 09/10/08

Road To Perdition is a unique mobster movie about the relationship of a father and his young son when their lives are upset by betrayals inside the organized crime family for which Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) works. With the sudden and tragic loss of his wife and younger son, Michael Sullivan turns from being the right-hand man of an organized crime lord to an outlaw on the run from the mob, to protect himself and his older son from the threat of the crime family. At the same time, he tries to lead his son away from a life of crime, also known as the Road To Perdition. On their journey, they form an unforgettable bond. And it is this relationship that bears the biggest impact on this mobster action film

9/10 great gangster movie

Hall Leaves On A High Note
Review created: 07/06/08

Conrad Hall went out with a bang. The great film photographer finished his illustrious career with this movie before passing on. He did himself proud as this is one of the best-looking crime films you'll ever see.

Of course, the acting ain't bad when you have Tom Hanks and Paul Newman playing the leads! The amount of action in here is just right, too: not too much; not too little.

None of the characters in here, frankly, are "good guys" as Hanks is a professional hit-man for town boss Newman. Hanks' only redeeming quality is not wanting his young son to wind up a killer like him, although he does teach him how to be the getaway man in robberies! Huh?

As good as the acting is and as interesting as the story is, the real star of this film is cinematographer Hall, who paints scene after beautiful scene with his lens. His work is just awesome.

The most fantastic Father/Son bonding movie.
The boy loves and respects his father. The 1930s ethos is tangible. The acting and direction are outstanding. Tom Hanks is cast brilliantly. Paul Newman compliments the emotions drawn by this movie. Even the boy is terrific.

I loved it.

  BAB BOY TOM
Review created: 26/01/08

Tom Hnaks as a really bad guy. Just goes to prove what a versatile actor he is. This comes across as a dark, almost gothic, tale. Could have been durected by Tim Burton on a good day.

This DVD was bought as part of my daughter's A level Film Studies course.
Personally, I'm not usually into gangster type films but I watched this one with my daughter and it is excellent. There's a cracking storyline running through it, which gives the film a great depth of emotional meaning.
I would certainly recommend it!

  Road To Perdition

Road to perdition is set in the early US. It's a fairly slow laid back kinda film - don't get me wrong it's not a bad film just not one you'd pop in the DVD player to watch a 2nd or 3rd time.

A hit man and his son take revenge for the killing of the wife/mother and son/brother. not much else really to say about it apart from Tom Hanks is Excellent - although I'd like to see him go back to some comedy roles again.

Road to Perdition - Yet another Tom Hanks movie
Review created: 04/04/07
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Tom Hanks performance was brilliant as usual. There was a good supporting cast, but not even this fact made this lact lustre movie worth viewing a second time.

The plot is very thin with predicitability. You already know how the movie will end long before it happens.

Yawn, someone tell me why we are watching this?

To sum it up in one word "Pants!".

  Road To Perdition DVD
Review created: 05/03/07

After watching the new James Bond film, Casino Royale, I bought this DVD because I like Daniel Craig and wanted to see what he would be like in it. Daniel was not the lead role but let's face it, is brilliant in anything he does ! I enjoyed this film immensely. It had a brilliant storyline and was gripping from beginning to end. The film is basically about 'The Mob'/Gangsters, their families and codes of honour, and more importantly, what happens when you lose alliegance or cross the line ! What goes around, comes around in this film, justice prevails and a little bit of a tear jerker in parts. Oh yes, Jude Law plays the part of a rather sadistic photographer !
