The River (DVD)

the humour is brilliant the scenery is excellent and david essex is oh so gorgeous first class series to watch highly reccomended

I watched this when it was on tv and i loved it then. Watching it again i realised why i liked it first time round. David Essex is such a charmer in this.

This is a funny , sweet ,love story .
I waited many years to find this on DVD after seeing it on TV all those years ago.
David Essex is in his first acting role on TV and it shows at first as he seems stilted and shy.but watch on and he shines thru.

Get this series.It's worth the pennies

Several years ago,The River,was a series on T.V. I saw several episodes of it and thoroughly enjoyed it;however I never did see the last few episodes.The area in which I live now does not receive a T.V.signal,so only DVDs & videos are watched.I was delighted to find the series on DVD for sale on e-bay.It was a "had to have!"(and cheaper than the shops.)
The series about a chap(David Essex)who is a colourful cockney character,who opts out for the more rural life of a lock keeper,in beautiful country surroundings(including the local village pub!)his zany friends,the antics they get up to and the scrapes and adventures they get up to.Of course there is a woman involved;a zany Scots Bargee,whose barge breaks down beside his lock.She moves in to the lock keepers cottage,with hilarious results, while waiting for her barge to be repaired!
Having lived for many years beside the river,it`s amazing how true to life some of it is!It`s full of soft,rural humour-all good clean fun,but not without it`s witty inuendoes.Thoroughly recommended DVD for anyone who wants to sit back and enjoy a couple of hours of laughter without smut!! The other reason I had to buy it..David Essex could take my boat through his lock anyday!

i remember this from bbc tv back in the late 80's and it has aged very well. shame it only ran for six episodes, as one gets the feeling that it could easily have been another vicar of dibley. david essex is very good in the starring role and the supporting cast are all suitably engaging and quirky. pity it wasn't given more time to develop.if you are a fan of bbc comedy this is a must have for you
