Album Notes 1988's AMNESIA finds Thompson at the beginning of his long, aesthetically successful collaboration with American producer Mitchell Froom. Froom helped to modernize Thompson's sound, taking him further away from his folk-rock background (an idea that must have appealed immensely to the ever forward-looking RT) without losing what made him special. So, though the production values are a touch more high tech on AMNESIA, the Thompson fire still burns bright. The beautiful, longing ballad "Waltzing's For Dreamers" and blazing "Gypsy Love Songs" find Richard the songwriter at the top of his game, while his guitar work is as phenomenal as ever on the tear-'em-up coda of "You Can't Win." AMNESIA pointed the way towards a healthy new direction in Thompson's recording career.
