Album Notes
T.D.F. features Eric Clapton on guitar, performing under the pseudonym X-Sample.T.D.F.: X-Sample, Simon Climie.Additional personnel: Paul Waller (drums).OK, here's the deal. First came Portishead, the Chemical Brothers and, come to think of it, Enigma. Then came superstars like David Bowie and U2 weaving the sounds of trip-hop and jungle into their 1997 releases. Now comes T.D.F., a collaboration between Simon Climie (of the late-'80s UK duo Climie Fisher) and the mysterious guitarist X-Sample (formerly known, for example, as "Slowhand" and "God"). The duo's instrumentals on RETAIL THERAPY jump all over the musical map, mixing manic beats and stinging guitar ("Sno-God") with quiet-stormy music that would sound at home on a Babyface record ("Angelica's Dream"). Although some of these tracks, like "Donna," cleave to the path of light jazz accessibility, T.D.F.'s more experimental compositions dance on the fringes. In "Sienna," guitars and effects swirl around an odd tempo set by the sound of dripping water. A sample of "How Blue Can You Get," by noted X-Sample influence B.B. King, is dropped into the fast-paced maelstrom that is "Seven."
