Disturbing, harrowing story of drug addiction and the horrors to which it can lead. Among a strong cast, Ellen Burstyn gives an unforgettable performance as an old lady who becomes hooked on slimming pills.

  Haunting

Darren Aronofsky’s directorial follow-up to ‘Pi’ has gained a degree of notoriety in recent years because of its graphic scenes showing the consequences of drug addiction, but ‘Requiem For A Dream’ in many ways lives up to its elegant title.

It is a moving and captivating film showing how drug addiction can utterly ruin the dreams and lives of a diverse group of characters. The most affecting story strand follows Sarah Goldfarb, the TV-fixated mother of Jared Leto’s character Harry, whose desire to lose weight to appear on a gruesome lifestyle show leads her to a disreputable doctor and a prescription of ‘diet pills’. These uppers and downers certainly give her more weight loss than she bargained for but also lead her down the path of mental breakdown.

The acting is superb throughout, but a special mention must go to Marlon Wayans who I had only previously seen in asinine comedies, but excels as Harry’s drug-dealer accomplice.

The most remarkable feature of the film, however, is Aronofsky’s direction, which is visually dazzling. He employs split screens, speeded-up and slowed-down scenes and fantasy/dream sequences to portray the disorientation of his characters.

Viewing to the very end requires a certain grim will. The final ten minutes make ‘Trainspotting’ look like a jolly outing, but ‘Requiem For A Dream’ is a haunting modern fable which remains with you long after it has finished. Recommended.

A fantastic film that includes themes of bleakness and depravity. This might not seem like a winning combination, but it really is a great film. Buy it!

  Rollercoaster viewing

An absolute roller coaster ride of story telling combined with the best cinamatography I've ever seen. Definately a film to own as every time you watch it you'll pick up a different aspect to the movie. I love all the acting and the story-line is truley an artistic masterpiece. Due to the graphic scenes and swearing its not a film for under 18's though, but it has such a strong anti-drug message that it should be dubbed and shown in schools, it would do wonders. One to watch and own! A classic of our time.

  Requiem for a Dream

This is a very disturbing film, and as much as I like a bit of horror and disturbing, this takes it to a new level. It is often described as a favourite film of many people that I know. I am not sure if it could be one of my favourites, but it is on my list of films to see before you die! It takes you into the lives of drug addicts, and not in a way that you might be used to. It doesn't over glorify the whole drugs scene. In fact it probably takes you a little too far into it, dangerously far, into the world none of us would want to be in. Great film, worth a watch.

  requiem for a dream
Review created: 30/12/08

the American dream, writ large as nightmare.

a warning tale of addiction, lazy ambition and the sad consequence of aiming low and still coming up short. Great performances all round, Leto and Wayans are solid players but the lights that shine brightest here are Connelly and Busrtyn, the younger is the goal free trust fund kid slumming it for kicks, Busrtyn the older lonely doting widow, continually let down but forgiving of the loser son in whom she can see only the goodness of her beloved late husband.

dazzling visuals and migraine editing are as big a star here as any screen player, watch late at night, in the safety of alcohol haze and thank the stars that tomorrow the worst you'll suffer is a hangover.

  Insightful and real!
Review created: 18/10/08

This film gives us a look into the lives of people desperate to make something of themselves and how it can all go terribly wrong. You can tell it wasn't as high budget as most of the major films but nevertheless it held its own. I thought Jared Leto played the part really well and gave his character the spunk it needed. All in all i liked it for what it was

  Requiem for a dream

Kept me captivated for its stark awfulness, of what lurks below the layers of suburban normality; reminded me a bit of a slicker, American version of Trainspotting. Extremely well acted, I'd never seen a film with Jared Leto in it, he was excellent as was Jennifer Connelly. Beautifully shot, you have a multi layered story about dreams and escape, about escalating addiction in lots of ways. Wow! Really recommend.

  Extreme nightmare

I don't know how I got to find this film.Read a few reviews. And thought how can a simple film ever be so disturbing as people say.I have seen PI and liked that film by the same director,so gave Requiem for a dream a try. From the offset I could tell this film was about addiction,And lives were going to end bad.But watching the film style sucks you in to the routine loop of the lives of these people.slowly getting sucked down by addiction.the down hill spiral speeds up until you feel like you are going down the plug hole with them.I found my self questioning my own simple addictions.Thats the disturbing bit.Opens your eyes to a lot of things..

  One Great Film!
Review created: 01/07/08
by:

I didn't think I'd like this film based on what a couple of reviewers had said about it being depressing and a "drug movie". The subject matter is tactfully and skilfully dealt with and a unique tapestry is woven by the director, one that makes you cringe at times because it is a dark and deep topic, but I have rarely walked away from a film feeling richer for the experience, but I did with this one. The american dream, the pursuit of happiness, the addiction of hope and dope, are the base layers for this wicked concoction and what amazed me the most is that there is not one wasted scene in this work, not one, each segment is relevant and thought provoking. It is a sad film, but is a worthwhile experience. The performances of the lead cast members are astonishing, especially Ellen Burstyn and Jared Leto. Watch it and make your own mind up, but if you liked Butterfly Effect, Donnie Darko and such potential cult classics, you'll love this flick.
