Strong story, based on a real-life drama, about a town divided by racism being united by the success of its American football team, led by a tough new black coach. Solid performance by Denzel Washington.

The fact that it was based on a true story with regards to race issues and how people on both races became united, demonstrating how racism can be overcome when people are educated about another culture and learn to appreciate the culture and differences of that culture.

Remember The Titans (DVD 2001) - Excellent

This is a great movie! I am not overly into American Football but this film has so much more to it then the games. It is a story of a town divided by colour, being pulled back together by the new coach of the local school. The film has something for all audiences and like many all time greats, is the recreation of a true story.

As soon as i discovered Ebay i had a short shopping list of things to buy and this movie was right at the top! Retailing for around £10 i picked up a perfect second hand copy for £3 plus £1 P&P!

  I'll Remember The Titans
Review created: 10/11/09

Based on a true story "Remember The Titans" follows the 1971 T.C. Williams High School Titans football team. Two Coaches, Two Schools, ONE Football Team. Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is the head coach of the football team at the black high school. Bill Yoast (Will Patton) is the head coach of the football team at the white high school. The Schools bind together and make one team. Boone ends up becomming the Head Coach while Yoast ends up becoming the Assistant Coach. This is one great film to watch. As I love American Football, some other American Football films you might want to see is, Friday Night Lights & Any Given Sunday.

Without a question mark, the film's title is an instruction and not an inquiry. Dealing with the issue of racial integration within a high school football team in the seventies, it's clearly meant as a warning. What follows is two hours of unabashed manipulation aimed less at impassioning racial harmony than leaving the audience with a lump in their throat and a tear in their eye.

Remember The Titans is based on the true story of an African American football coach hired by a Virginia high school in 1971. Denzel Washington plays the dictatorial Coach Herman Boone who arrives at T.C. Williams High School facing the unenviable job of replacing the successful and beloved Coach Bill Yoast (Patton) and of coaching the Titans during its first year of integration. Neither man is happy with the situation, particularly Yoast who now finds himself under Boone, but their discontent is minimal compared to the resentment felt by his players who now find their positions under threat from the new black students who themselves aren't exactly thrilled by the situation.

The tension between both factions erupts during training camp when the old team leader Gerry Bertier (Hurst) squares off against Big Julius Campbell. Following the brawl, both men form a close bond and when Coach Boone forces each player to ask questions of and get to know each other, the hostility is replaced by understanding and tolerance. It's a feeling not so readily shared by the other citizens of Alexandria, the predominantly white town in which the school is located.

By paralleling the team's fortunes with the issue of integration you cheer for the Titans' success on the field as you cheer for their unity off it. Although based on a true story, it's hard not to think that director Boaz Yoakin and writer Gregory Allen Howard have played liberally with its authenticity in their shameless quest to rouse emotions. Everything is rousing, from the impassioned speeches, including Boone's own Gettysburg address, to the music. Indeed, at times you wonder whether they were tempted to make a musical as the players launch into impromptu singalongs at the drop of a helmet.

The players are plucked from a well-worn selection of clichés, from the blond Californian quarterback, through the obligatory fat person who is the source of ridicule. Despite the token characterisation, as with any sporting film it's not about the individuals. It's about the team. And inevitably, as with most sporting films, the result is never in doubt.

Remember The Titans may be corny and predictable, but it succeeds on its own terms. It doesn't purport to be some lofty racial polemic, it simply deals with the issue on a provincial level. And at the heart is another convincing display by Denzel Washington who as ever is able to imbue his character and the film with dignity and integrity.

I bought this because it's a great film but is also a brilliant subject for the "religion in the media" coursework at GCSE. It's based on a true story which makes it even more of a feel good film. I can honestly say that there is nothing I dislike about this product

Based on true events in Virginia in the 1970s ‘Remember The Titans' is one of the best movies to feature American Football out there. Set against a backdrop of severe racial unrest, 'Titans' basically follows the story of a High School American Football team that is created from the merger of two High Schools; one all black and the other all white. Denzil is Herman Boone, the newly appointed Head Coach and the first African American faculty member at T.C. Williams High School, that has to deal with the players both on and off the field. With great subject mater and an entirely watchable cast this film simply isn’t long enough.
