Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way (CD 2002)

It's taken four years for this album to fully establish itself with me. I'm very glad I took my time before I wrote this review, because By the Way has made slow but assured progress to a select group of my favourite albums; older, familiar music has a way of etching itself upon a specific period in one's life, somehow making it more enduring.

It's not usually in my nature to overexpose the minutiae of particular songs in a review (as they can do the talking for themselves), but I reserve special praise for one. Perhaps if I thought about it for long enough I'd conclude that Dosed is among my twenty favourite songs of all time, but that's a very strong assumption for anyone to make about a song (as moods are transient, and hence so is favouritism in music). It is without doubt the best on the album by a long way.

Only today, by chance of a broken earphone, did I appreciate the subtle montage that makes up the melody. It manages to be soothing, rippling and deeply rich all at once. It has served as a song for my life, and completely justifies my purchase of the album by itself.

That said, the album itself is a deep trench of quality to delve into, but I won't waste your time by giving several other tracks the album boasts the recognition they deserve; I think I've said enough to convince you. It is a mainstay in my favourites collection owing to the CONSTANT quality that pervades it.

By the Way didn't feel like a trademark album from the Red Hot Chili Peppers when I bought it, but its longevity simply proves that there are strings to their bow other than what we have come to expect.

I didn't really like the Chili Peppers until Californication, and even then, I thought there was a serious decline in the quality of the songs in the second half on that album... enough to make me not bother to buy By The Way. But having acquired it recently, I can't believe how good it is. Far, far, better than Californication in my opinion, because the songs are fantastic all the way through, and there's a wider range of styles than just rocky and mellow. Highlights for me are Universally Speaking, Zephyr Song, Cabron, On Mercury, Venice Queen - and the two undoubted highlights, which I just don't seem to be able to stop playing at the moment - Don't Stop, the first 30 seconds of which are just perfection, and the rest just very, very good, and the utterly gorgeous Tear, the harmonies on which are like the Beatles and Beach Boys rolled into one.

Currently playing the whole album twice a day; absolutely perfect for gazing out of the window at the summer sky. My only slight worry is that I will get tired of it eventually... time perhaps to go and buy Stadium Arcadium before I do.

this album is amazing, in my opinion i think it is the chili's best album to date despite the criticism saying that it's not as good as their albums such as 'californication' and 'blood sugar sex magik'. this album really does show off kiedis' highly improved voice (compared to some of their earlier albums). there is a great balance of songs ranging from in your face 'Can't Stop' all the way down to songs such as 'dosed' and 'warm tape' which are more relaxing. i bought this album with high expectations which it met and almost exceeded, this album is definitely a must have not only for chili's fans, but also for fans of great music :-)

Fantastic album! Probably my favourite - and most pop-esque - album to come from the Chilis. The album opens with the massive hit 'By The Way' and after that offers more great tracks, such as 'the zyphyr song' and 'can't stop': no fillers. Frusciante succeeds in delivering more great riffs, melodies, and memorable solos. You find yourself singing along to the solos after listening a few times!

The album has been ordered really well. A lot of people will say that this doesn't matter: I think differently. Over all, a great album! A CD that everyone should have in their collection.

A really great album, the red hot chili peppers' musical talent really begins to shine through these sixteen tracks. Favourites including Can't Stop (a regular number used to open most live performances), Universally Speaking, Don't Forget Me, The Zephyr Song and Venice Queen (a brilliant finalle with a unexpected rhythm guitar ending).
Well done chilis another great album!

This album is absolutely fantastic, definitely one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers best albums. It has something for everyone, very easy listening too. Would strongly recommend!

A great album with a variety of different styles. 'Tear' is a great song. 'By the Way' is fantastic. Overall a masterpiece.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way is an excellent album if you like the red hot chili peppers then this album is for you. Classic red hot chili peppers. In my opinion its not as good as there latest cd Stadium Arcadium but its still well worth getting.

I,d been looking for this album for ages as mine was old and scratched and no longer would play i was so excited when i bouught it on ebay for a bargain price i had super fast delivery and it was in excellent condition i would like to thank the seller for giving me hours of enjoyable listening.

Excellent rock band that keeps coming out with very good sounding lyrics.The main reason i bought this album is because i liked the song called,By the way.The whole album is very good but that song stands out for me the most.Very good band.
