Red Dwarf - Series 1 (DVD 2002)

Firstly bear in mind that although the DVD came out in 2002, Series 1 of Red Dwarf was written 20 years ago in 1988 and aired on BBC2.

This has to be one of the all time cult classic shows - never again will the BBC (or anyone else for that matter) create such great entertainment with such low budget props ! After 20 years I can still watch this time and time again and thoroughly enjoy it plus my 12 year old has watched every episode back to back and loves it as much as I do. Its almost compulsory viewing while having a take away curry and lager (it will all become clear when you watch it).

The scene is set on a mining ship travelling through space mining gems and such like from space debris. Following a catastrophic radiation leak the ship's computer seals the cargo bay and stasis booth (containing Dave Lister) for 3 million years until the radiation clears. This is no small ship !

After 3 million years, Dave Lister (Craig Charles) - the last human is released from Stasis and is joined by a senile computer (Norman Lovett), a hologram of his former bunk mate (Chris Barrie)and a cat in human form (Danny John-Jules)which has evolved over 3 million years from a cat safely sealed in the hold.... The madness begins.

Red Dwarf ran for 8 series and it was always left open for a 9th series or even a film - who knows maybe it will happen yet. Every series of Red Dwarf changes things a bit - in Series three a further key member joins the crew - Kryten an accentric service droid played by Robert LLewellyn. The interaction between the cast is excellent but there are often flaws in the storyline - this is all part of its charm !

The BBC could not have picked a better cast to play these characters and there isn't a bad episode.

Also when buying the DVD (rather than the videos which were released much earlier) you get a lot of bonus extras including deleted scenes and smeg ups (outtakes). I have replaced all my videos now for DVD's just to get all this great extra material - a must have for any fan - all 8 Series !!!!

This is the series of Red Dwarf that has the most claim to a cult following. The production crew and cast were unhappy about its appearance and so BBC did not repeat the shows.
BUT... on viewing now, all these years later, you can see all of the ingredients that made RD such a huge hit.
The jokes are good, the banter between Rimmer and Lister quite edgy (in real life they did not get on too well at this stage)and the storylines were innovative.
So we have 6 episodes that set the scene for the 7 series' to follow. Well worth buying for historical perspective alone.
The extras are very good, plenty of interviews, deleted scenes and wonderfully relaxed cast commentaries.
If you get a chance, buy this 2 disc set. It will amuse you and interest you at the same time.

If like me you want to have a chuckle, and you enjoy a good british tv comedy, then Red Dwarf is a must!

Maybe i`m biased but Red Dwarf still holds its own today very funny and well worth buying, the story lines and characters are so well put together its priceless...

Where it all began. Simply a classic, nothing more can be said! Me2 is one of the best episodes ever!

Was as described...brand new in sealed packing. Perfect! Would have been good enough to give as a gift...but I wanted it myself! :o)

Always loved Red Dwarf and as my dvd collection got destroyed years ago, i thought when better to replace them than now as red dwarf is back on screens in all new episodes. hopefully they will be just as good. in my opinion series one being the best but all are outstanding comedy, a set no self respecting dwarf fan should be without! Red Dwarf is a classic British series. It's funny, entertaining and didn't cost the earth!!
I bought it as an xmas present for my boyfriend which means i will get to watch them all again too. Everyone's a winner.

I always enjoyed the Red Dwarf series of a few years ago, and took the oportunity to buy a copy of the early TV shows that I found on Ebay. What I particularly liked about my purchase was that it was delivered to my door and at a sensible (cheap) price, most convenient.

Every one should watch it!!! All the characters are really really funnny, even through most of them arent even human.
I think the cat is one of the funniest!!!

had many great memories of this tv show and decided to buy the first series after a friend lent me the audio books. had me laughing and like a lunatic, great show, great times

The first in the Red Dwarf series and most definately the best, don't get me wrong all the others are great, but the "Dave they're dead, they're all dead Dave" sceen, still makes me laugh even though I've seen it countless times. This DVD's a must and if you have the time read the books, they are stunning.

I love watching this as I am an avid Red Dwarf fan and relish being reminded how the story started. This is truly a sitcom out of time! The makers had to try and sell it to the broadcasters who were skeptical of a comedy set in space, but their fears were soon unfounded, as ratings skyrocketed like Starbug taking off and the rest is history.
If you've never seen it before, or if you just catch the repeats on Dave, treat yourself to series 1 - get addicted. The characters are out of this world and the jokes and banter are star quality.
And remember - Better Smeg Than Dead!

brought back memories of first viewing realising how outdated sets are by comparison to today but just fantastic viewing even my children thought it was too good to put down worth a re watch

For any sci-fi nut out there who likes a bit of comedy thrown in this is a must series for you. A human, a hologram, a cat-like creature and a computer, 3 million years from Earth travelling in a massive starship.

You will laugh, you will cry and you will learn the value use for the word SMEG!!!!

This product is fantastic, i bought it to add to my collection and have been very pleased :-). i recomend this to anyone who loves a good laugh!

brilliant and very funny, takes me back to my teen years when i couldn't wait for the next episode. i honestly can't think of anything that has beaten this for laughs in the past ten years or so.

if you liked The Hitch Hikers Guide you will love Red Dwraf.
it takes a little time to get to know their sense of humour but when you get it you will have to go back and start from the beginning. i have it all on video and now have started to get it on DVD.

I love this DVD because I am a huge fan of Red Dwarf and when I saw this DVD on ebay I knew I just had to buy it. I am so pleased I bought it because it brings me hours of laughter. British Comedy at its BEST!!!
