Album Notes Counting Crows: David Bryson (guitar, dobro, tambourine, vocals); Dan Vickrey (guitar, vocals); Adam Duritz (piano, Wurlitzer piano, tambourine, vocals); Charles Gillingham (Hammond B-3 organ, piano, Mellotron, Wurlitzer piano, accordion, harmonica, vocals); Matt Malley (electric & acoustic basses, vocals); Ben Mize (drums, tambourine, light bulbs, Zippo lighter, vocals).Additional personnel: David Immergluck (pedal steel guitar, octave mandolin); Marvin Etzioni (mandolin); Mark Phythian (programming).Three years after AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER paved the Triple A way for the likes of Hootie & The Blowfish, Counting Crows take a more aggressive tack with their sophomore release. As with the debut, the sound takes its cue from singer Adam Duritz's introspective lyrics, but Duritz deals with especially weighty topics this time--the ups and downs of fame are on his mind now--and the band's approach is more slashing than subdued. The yearning "Catapult" opens the record with a quavering guitar and Mellotron, but it gives way to the crashing cymbals, raging guitar and screaming organ of "Angels Of The Silences," a song about rejection. Even the strings on "I'm Not Sleeping" attack with an angry urgency before they are finally consumed by Dan Vickrey's squalling guitar. The Counting Crows showed off their bark on their debut; now they're showing off their bite. Editorial Reviews Rolling Stone (11/28/1996) Spin (11/01/1996) Rolling Stone (11/28/1996) | |||||||||||||
Reviews Didn't get into these until late 90's - so missed out on this one until I heard Bob Harris play a track on his Saturday show. Well up to their normal standard and you can now pick it up at a bargain price. Review ID: 10000000005138290 Was this review helpful? Report this review I was introduced to Counting Crows by a friend in the early 90's via August And Everything After. I loved the way the lyrics told stories, unlike the repetitive lyrics that you often get from other bands. Seeing them live for the first time was an experience unlike any other as Adam (Duritz, lead singer) changed the lyrics around and merged songs into each other. The live performances secured me as a lifelong fan. Of all their albums Recovering The Satellites has to be my favourite. It is the darker, rockier album of them all and I love the energy in it's songs (especially live). Great album, but if you're new to the Crows I would suggest buying 'August' first. Off the back of loving that CD I bought this, their second album. This album has a deeper more rock feel overall, while still including what I see as the trademark haunting, mournful tracks. All the tracks are memorable for the distinctive vocals of Adam Duritz, the while the lyrics are biting don't quite have the same poetic element of the first album. If you liked the first album you'll like this, and shows that the band were not one hit wonders. Review ID: 10000000003558197 Was this review helpful? All tracks are good but if i had to chose my two favourites they would be 'Daylight Fading' and 'A Long December' which I saw the band perform brilliantly to a large outdoor audience at Holmdel,NJ, this I consider a great privilige, and strongly recommend this album and the band. An absolute masterpiece of an album by an excellent band. Review ID: 10000000001160138 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
