The mix of pop and R&B here is a link to Carey's past efforts, but the injection of a hip-hop flavor on several tunes points the way toward the singer's future.Carey hasn't changed her style so radically as to partake in rapping; instead she's assisted by some talented guests, like Jay-Z, who enlivens the opener "Heartbreaker," and the "Heartbreaker" remix, where Mariah is flanked by Missy Elliot and Da Brat." On the poppier side, there's a stately piano ballad co-written by the ubiquitous Diane Warren and an unexpected cover of the Phil Collins hit "Against All Odds," which Carey delivers with soul and faithfulness to the original version. RAINBOW provides just the right balance between the old Mariah that fans know and love, and the new Mariah, who refuses to stop growing. Editorial Reviews Rolling Stone (11/25/1999) | |||||||||||
Reviews Review created: 23/07/08 by: This is a classic album, which will never feel old, the songs are well produced and Mariah's vocals are truly amazing, the collaboraion with Jay-Z on Heartbreaker add a nice touch to the track as well as the Heartbreaker remix with Da Brat and Missy. The lyrics are exellent and I love the tracks Cant take that away from me and Cry Baby feat Snoop. I have the album on tape since it came out and had to finish my collection of Mariah's albums in CD so this was an excellent buy for me as I DO NOT SUPPORT COPIES! I don't believe this is Mariah Carey at her best all. I think Mariah Carey at her best was on her earlier albums like music box. More recently I’d say she it at her best on the album 'Butterfly' this is the album where Mariah Carey took the leap into more R&B fused music. The albums between ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Emancipation of Mimi’ have seen the worst of Mariah Carey in my opinion, which includes this album ‘Rainbow’. ‘Emancipation of Mimi’ was a long awaited return of Mariah Carey’s capability to deliver excellent music. We all know Mariah Carey has one of the greatest voices on the planet but let's face she does go over board sometimes. By that I mean the annoying super high key she does. I mean it totally crashes the song sometimes and I believe she used it quite a few times too often on this album. Don't get me wrong there a few good tracks on the album but my favourite has to be Heartbreaker (the remix) which features Missy Elliot and Da Brat. I would rate this album as Average not excellent. It is just OK. Review ID: 10000000002336488 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 04/07/06 by: This album was an absolutely fantastic buy. Mariah really is at her best here. The tracks are all outstanding and beautifully and soulfully sung. Look out for instant weepies like Thank God I Found You featuring Joe and 98 degrees. Mariah's rendition of the Phil Collins Take A Look At Me Now is also one for all those heartbroken people out there. A true must for any true Mariah fan. 5 out of 5.
