The Railway Children

This is my favourite movie of all time - to me it has everything from a strong story to great individual performances, combined with humour and poignancy. The star (for me) has to be Bernard Cribbens as the truculant railway porter: the scene where he stands on his dignity regarding his perception of his birthday gifts is beautifully done. I think I fell in love with Sally Thomsett at a very young age...
The one word I would use in describing this movie is "heartwarming". Okay, it may be a touch "schmaltzy" in places (the scene towards the end with Jenny Agutter exclaiming "Daddy! My Daddy!" always brings tears to my eyes!) but I have a feeling that this is more to do with how well the scenes were done, than any intention by the producer to make them sentimental or soppy.
I also have a soft spot for Yorkshire and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, so I just love to see the grimy millstone grit houses of Oakworth, and hear the Yorkshire acccents - no matter how simulated!
I think this is a quintessentially English movie, and it evokes a time now sadly gone for ever. I already have the video, but have decided to add the DVD to my collection as a precaution against the day when my VCR finally gives up the ghost!
