This movie is in my view Hammer's best. Nigel Kneale's excellent story combined with good sets, great direction and fine actors add to the overall effect and result in a thoroughly enjoyable film.Yes some of the SFX may leave a little to be desired, there may be a goof or two, yet somehow these are overlooked, whilst the viewer takes in the storyline and soaks up the atmosphere and ambience, leading to an exciting and hard to predict climax.

Do look carefully for meaningful facial expressions from nearly all the characters, especially Barbara Shelley ( Miss Judd ) and the superb over acting by Duncan Lamont ( Sladden ) in the church scene, Anrew Keir played the Quatermass part to perfection, indeed all the casting was spot on. I have watched this movie many times and never seem to tire of it, there is not a single dull moment throughout, the music score blends in beautifully and flows along in harmony, but never overpowers. Do remember this is a 40 year old production, British film-making at it's very best.

60's Sci-fi period classic, possibly the best of the Quatermass series. I suppose, like I did, most people will buy this because they remember once seing it on telly as a kid. From that perspective, great nostalga value in both plot & acting, the setting, unearthing an ancient spacecraft while digging the London Underground, seems to add a spooky plausibility to it all especially if you've not seen it before. My daughters would call it "just one of dads old films" but i noticed it had been "borrowed" the other night ! ! gets a 9/10 from me ! great value !

The storyline is very good and progresses at a consistent and credible rate. The special effects are extremely good for its era and are not overdone. The acting is brilliant, lots of facial expressions and these to are not too exagerated. I loved this movie when i was (much!) younger and i wanted to see it again. I have not been dissapointed at all! It is a timeless movie really about alien invasion of earth from Mars and it really is great fun.

I like this film I enjoyed it when it was on BBC TV all them years ago, but then it was a bit scary as I was only young at the time. I think this film was ahead of its time, love the film. what every one wants to remember how long ago it was made.

  Classic Hammer
Review created: 01/07/08

A classic tale of horror/sci fi, arguably hammers finest film. Has aged well except for the terrible special affects when they wire up the ladies brain to watch the mars massacre... that really is poor, then strangely the effects towards the end when the horned evil is above london is suprisingly good. Great script, some camp moments but still one of the greatest old films of its genre. If you liked forbidden planet type suspense and atmosphere give it a go (but dont pay too much for it!) always check amazon and play first to make sure your not getting ripped off.
