I pondered for ages trying to decide between the Roberts RD55 and Pure's Evoke 3 as I wanted something that had functionality to pause and rewind, record (specifically to SD card), play FM stations, have stereo sound and play MP3's as well as one that gave great sound and could carry base and wouldn't distort at high volumes but I couldn't find anywhere on the net that compared the 2. I knew the Evoke 3 had won loads of awards but that was in 2006 and with it being 2008 I realised technology would have moved on so the newer RD55 could have improved or equal quality sound without having won any awards. In the end I realised the only option was to actually go into a shop and listen to the sound for myself (having a baby I'd put off doing that as it can be such a mission to get out these days!). The only local shop I found that had a good selection of DAB radios didn't stock the RD55 or the Evoke 3 but instead informed me that the Roberts RD25 was the best - which only served to confuse me more! (Interestingly when I tried to compare the RD55 with the RD25 I found Roberts website doesn't list the RD55 which is weird!??) It was hard to compare properly as they didn't have a full list of functionality to hand (and I wasn't about to read the full manual for each!) but from what I could tell the RD25 has MW as well as FM and DAB whereas the RD55 only has FM and DAB (which is what the Evoke 3 has). I was then torn as I liked the idea of having all 3 to give maximum option of stations, however after listening to the RD25 (which had good sound but distorted at high volume) and the Evoke 2 (which they had in stock and is very similar to Evoke 3 but with less functionality) I quickly realised it was the Evoke 3 for me. It is much larger and heavier than the RD25 but the sound quality isn't in the same league. With the Evoke 3 I can listen to it from another room with the volume up high with no distortion and great hi-fi quality sound. The RD25 sounded like I was listening to a good quality portable radio, the Evoke 2 sounded like I was listening to a hi-fi system. The style isn't great for my decor but with such great sound and features compared to any of the other portable DAB radios I could find, it was worth it. It has an eco mode for energy saving, you can play your mp3 player (or similar) through it, connect direct to your PC (for updates and editing files on the SD card - which you have to buy separately by the way) and you can buy a chargepak for it which is kind of like a rechargeable battery that lasts for approx 10 hours per charge (great if you're out and about a lot). It also has more presets than you're likely to need and 20 alarms with a touch switch snooze button (you can also set how long you want the snooze to be - anything from 5 to 59 minutes). The only downside is it doesn't allow you to record one station whilst listening to another nor does it have MW. But I still gave it 5 stars as compared to the other DAB radios I checked out, this was head and shoulders above the rest, even 2 years after its release - and that's got to be worth 5 stars!!!

i love the radio. we are not in a good area for reception so decided to buy the evoke 3 to give us the best chance for reception having read lots of other reviews. i am not disappointed at all and the reception is even better upstairs! the fm reception sounds almost as good anyway. this radio has a great earthy sound and looks really good too. not tried all of its features yet but plan to record and plan the programmes so will have lots of hours of fun for years to come.

Brilliant DAB radio. The addition of a SD memory card allows recording from broadcast radio allowing you to listen when you want and store the files.

Good sound quality. High spec - can play through external amp & dac. Will connect to a pc (if you have such a thing - only downside is that it isn't compatible with Macs).

Pure Digital EVOKE 3 FM/DAB Radio

I have been a fan of DAB radio since they were first available several years ago and purchased direct from PURE (the only way you could buy them at that time!) the Pure Evoke 1. This was and still is a basic radio with only DAB capability and no battery. It has to be attached to the mains at all times. Nevertheless I love this radio and still use it today, but I have wanted a radio that I could pause and review and record radio since they were available and now I have one and love it. I am still learning about all its features and will probably never master all of them, but for what I wanted it is perfect.

Absolutely fantastic! I bought this as I was fed up of the 'crackle' and static on my old radio. The Pure Evoke 3 is so easy to use, even my technophobe husband has worked it out! I've also bought a cable so that I can plug my iPod into it and listen to that in the kitchen.

All in all it's a great buy, and well worth the price.

I am listening to the radio as I type. A show I recorded two weeks ago but can listen to now for the first time.
I can listen again and I can go back to my favourite parts.
Simple to use, especially with the EPG selection.
Data is transferable to mpeg players and radio can be connected to other hi-fi systems.
Perhaps the bland design needs looking at but it could always be personalised.
I might even buy one for my dad.

It is the future of radio.

Evoke 3 DAB Radio with SD Card
Review created: 10/03/08

Its brilliant, I have set it up to record all my favourite radio programmes as MP2s on to an SD Card several months ago and its never failed. I have not missed a program since.

Its DAB recpetion is second to none, and the snooze handle is brilliant.

My only critism is its size because it is a stereo it quite bulky, if it was the same size as the Evoke 1 or Tempus 1 even being just mono I would prefer it.

  Pure Evoke 3
Review created: 11/09/09

Love this feature packed DAB radio! A real bargain from this super supplier.
The sound quality is fantastic, as you would from Pure. The features I've tried since it arrived this morning are: the rewind feature, to pick up a web address from a live programme and the record feature for a couple of things from Radio 4 this afternoon & using the electronic programme guide I've set another couple of items to record in the forthcoming days. The instructions are so easy to follow, that even a technophobe like me has been able to do these things! I even love the separate remote control, which initially I thought was un-necessary. You know how infuriating it is when a song is on the radio and you've missed the announcement telling you wo the artist is?.... No more the display is super clear. There are lots more features that I haven't tried yet, but feel confident that I will master everything this lovely little box has to offer. It really is the tardis of DAB radios! Try it - you'll love it.

Pure Digital EVOKE 3 FM/DAB Radio B grade
Review created: 10/09/09
by:

B grade item with minor marks on wood work near handle but otherwise in perfect condition. The radio is FM and DAB, the DAB is the main feature of this radio as the FM is OK but unless pre-sets are made is hard to use. The DAB reception is good being more sensitive than an older DAB radio I have, but needs a good signal. I eventually for use in the house mounted a aerial in the loft. When FM is switched off the DAB signal should be better.

The radio has nice recording and pause review features, I use the recording a lot and usually convert to MP3 for my "Ipod". DAB is Mp2 format and that is what is recorder on the SD card. SD cards: Sandisk is good but Kingston don't work so beware.

I am happy with it but couldn't pay the full priced item it is not good value.

A new version assessed by an old eye
Review created: 07/07/09

I have one of the original Pure Evoke 1 radios: mains only and display not easy to see other than from directly in front.

Having taken it to a department store to compare with the newer models for sound quality I was delighted with the 1S. Its bodyis wood whereas the original was plastic. Bass is better.

New display is BRILLIANT!

Addition of FM is useful too not because of weak signal but for stations not available on DAB

  Digital Radio with brilliant extras
Review created: 13/06/09(updated 13/06/09)
by:

First of all the product looks great, it is portable and can be used by plugging into the mains, a rechargeable battery pack or ordinary batteries.

I find that it picks up signals and stations in my area that other DAB products do not. It is simple to set up so you can start listening straight away.

Then come the bonuses such as pausing live radio or rewinding live radio for up to about 30 minutes. Fantastic if the phone rings or if you want to hear something again.

Then as if that was not enough you can record to a SD card up to 2GB of radio or music as you listen or by timer. Not only that but if you have music on your computer put in a SD card and transfer all your favourites. You then have your favourite tunes anywhere in the house or in the garden and as usable with batteries you don't even have to plug it in. If you don't have an SD slot on your computer you can get a USB connector with a slot for SD card so problem solved.

This really is a magnificent item and I can't imagine life without it now.

  Pure Evoke 3
Review created: 12/06/09

Possible the most expensive DAB radio you can buy!!
But the sound is fantastic! With a load of base and louder than the spec' would indicate.
Only DAB & FM but also plays MP3's from SD cards which is why I bought it. If you have an ipod there's a thousand docking stations, but if you have 'normal' MP3 players and a car SD card player this is the kiddie for you! Very easy to use and set up.
This later version runs on a 12v mains transformer, so you can make up a cigar plug cable and use it in your caravan/motorhome without expensive batteries (early Evoke 3's run on 9v).

Pure Evoke 3 Digital FM/DAB RADIO WITH SD SLOT
Review created: 09/06/09
by:

I have to say I was very pleased with this Radio I had Read about Four Audio Mag Reviews before looking for one to buy. The unit is very well Build made from very strong casing (Hard Wood) and small Enough to sit on the Small Shelf in the Kitchen. The unit allows you to store 30 mins of radio live with the extra SD slot this means you can Recorded many hours of radio and catch up on things worth hearing Something sadly Lacking on most others.
I feel it only fair to point out some bad points since I like to know myself when looking.
The Main Thing I found was that the Packing or Packaging that it come in really is not Good enough for safe packing its very good to see 100% Reused packing but this had not been thought about I was lucky enough to get mine Dropped off at my house. So if you can Pick it up or Ask about Extra box as its needed for sure.
The only other very slight Problem I feel that the power supply could of been a little smaller I my of been changed since I got mine but its over large and takes up space.

Over all a very nice Little Radio.

The best DAB Radio in the world?
Review created: 06/04/08

Quality of sound is great - stero wonderful.

Being DAB a whole new world of Radio programmes from R7 the last bastion of drama, humor and readings to Planet Rock (RIP?) all the best Rock without the Rubbish.

Styling a bit retro but fits in.

Why did I buy it? To escape from BBC Gheto Radio4 now sadly no more than PC Social worker radio for Islingtonites. Ebay Price right at the time.

Unfortunately I am unable to give a review on the above product purchased on Ebay as it was badly damaged in transit by the Royal Mail. I have currently lodged a compensation claim to them for the cost involved.
