The Punisher (DVD 2005)

In my opinion, this is one of the best films ive seen in a long time. Tom Jane is the perfect role for Frank Castle aka the Punisher, and fulfilled all my hopes for a good Punisher movie when I read about it in magazines. It follows almost the same storyline. With Howard Saint, played brilliantly and sadistically by John Travolta killing Castle's whole family after Castles drug bust that ends up with Saint's son being shot. The whole cast lived up to my expectations, and were foten hilarious, such as the apartment friends. The film is thoroughly entertaining, and at times sadistically violent. The story is a bit thin if you like twists and turns, as it is simply about a man who's family has been murdered getting revenge on those who did it, and being seemingly invincible. However, the action make the story irrelevant, and yet another Marvel classic has been successfully brought to life. Plans for a second punisher movie are underway, but I would definately watch the first film before, as most of the story will more than likely follow on.

Marvel Comics presents a second big-screen version of THE PUNISHER, with this action-packed adaptation from screenwriter-turned-director Jonathan Hensleigh. Frank Castle (Tom Jane) is a retired F.B.I. agent spurred into action after the merciless slaying of his wife, father, and son. Adopting the superhero guise of The Punisher, Castle aims to wreak vengeance for his dead family by tracking down the culprits responsible for their demise. All clues point to Howard Saint (John Travolta), a ruthless businessman and nightclub owner whose son was mistakenly killed by Castle in a botched undercover operation back in his F.B.I. days. Unique amongst Marvel superheroes, The Punisher possesses no special powers, just remarkable strength parried with a blind determination to avenge his family. As he hunts down Saint, Castle surrounds himself with three fellow societal outcasts to get the job done, namely Joan (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), Bumpo (John Pinette), and Dave (Ben Foster). Director Hensleigh eschews flashy CGI effects for the bulk of the movie, and instead reverts to old action-movie staples such as thrilling stunt work, gunfights, and huge explosions. The old-fashioned feel suits The Punisher well, providing an apt mirror of the hero's own lack of super powers. Hensleigh winds the film through a thrilling white-knuckle ride to its spectacular conclusion, ultimately providing a highly appropriate movie for one of Marvel's lesser-known comic book heroes.

The Russian Rocks!!! Way Better Then The Punisher!!!

When you start watching the movie, after so many re-makes of this movie, you almost fall asleep, especially with such a poor actor as Tom Jane who isn't a rough cop person, but more of a weakling, desk-type kind of man.

UNTILL the russian comes into action and has the job to kill him!
Then movie hits off and i started to laugh so hard that they heard me across the street, the russian is like the terminator, nothing can kill him, hes so strong!

He gets a knife in his chest, doesn't affect him, he just keeps coming after him, he throws the punisher through a wall, and walks through the wall ( sound familiar? the terminator 2? ). Frank finally manages to get a gun, but because he's so beaten up, he barely can lift it, and the russian puts the gun on the table, gets something heavy and smashes the guns barrel to pieces, hilarious!!!

Ofcourse the punisher has to win, so he throws some sort of boiling water in his face ( end of terminator 2? ) and pushes him of the stairs and he breaks sadly his neck then :S

That was 1 hell of a amazing hilarious and cool action scene, that gives you the right to rent or buy this movie alone already.

The rest is borrowed from other movies again & all and pretty standard, just watch that russian action scene, after that its safe to turn your TV of or something, but that action scene just pure ROCKED!

Bought this DVD after my son wanted it, I have still not watched it all the way through but he is very impressed with the film. I love anything with John Travolta in it so I know I will like it.

saw the film on the telly and it was a great film, really enjoyed it so decided to buy it. its a film all about revenge and that there is no justice. highly recommended purchase A*

Very enjoyable action/comic book character film. John puts in his usual quality baddy performance and the fil isn't let down by the poor photography of the 3rd film. Best of the bunch so far

A good film, action scenes were superb. Not quite as good as the latest punisher film. but then i may be biased as i watched the new one first and i was comparing the two, which isn't particulary fair. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Bought purely for the HMV cover cause i already own it, fantastic film for all those who love marval comics and films. Plus John Travolta in pure pantomine vilian mode .. . . .. . . god love him. :-)

One of the best Marvel films to date, No glitz, glam or CGI which we have come to expect with the majority of the Marvel franchise. Just a action packed film with old school stunts which has done a good effort at trying to stay true to the comics. Shame Thomas Jane never came nack for the second one!!!

Good film but not to be taken too seriously. Like the comic book slightly over the top feel (fight with "The Russian"). Tends not to be a gore feast, but always hints at whats going on. In my opinion this is better then blood and guts...

Although 4 years old this is still a classic and an excellent film, watch out for the song 'In Time' from Mark Collie, a truly brilliant piece of evocative music which fits the film to a 'T'

John Travolta (the ruthless business man)verses Tom Jane, The merciless vigilante,the acting is brilliant as usual,from two great actors.

Bought this for my son who loves playing the X-box game, he thought the film was fantastic. Great acting and a great action packed movie.

The Punisher is a film based on the Marvel Comic of the same name. Unlike most of Marvel's The Punisher is a vigilante who goes on a one man mission against crime in New York after the brutal murder of his family.

The film plays out a good pace and the action set pieces are done well. Tom Jane manages to portray Frank Castle (aka The Punisher) very well. The fight scene against The Russian (played by TNA wrestler Kevin Nash) is one of the best comic book hero-villain fights in recent times.

Fans of the comic will be divided as in some ways it manages to stick to the story and tone of the books closely at points however at times the humor and restraint of Castle's characters can be seen as out of place with the rest of the film.

The only real negative points about this film are probably John Travolta and Rebbecca Romijn-Stamos (also seen as Mystique in the X-Men Trilogy). Travolta seems to, throughout most of the film, be trying to do all of his lines with out moving any facial muscles. Stamos at points in the film tries to synthesis with Castle and whether through poor script writing or bad acting never really manages to make the audience believe that she has suffered as bad as Castle and thus making her attempts to connect with him awkward.

Overall The Punisher is an entertaining revenge action film, that may not be as good as some of Marvel's other films (such as X-Men or Spider-Man) but it is good enough.

absolutely love this film! if you love comics like spiderman and the x men you will probably love this too, however this film is a bit more dark than those other films, however the storyline is great and the cast is fab! not to mention how gorgeous tom jane is as frank castle( real reason bought the film really, so that i could drool over him for 90 mins!!) i highly recommend this film!!!

enjoyed this film, found it quite sad in places, and very violent in others,some parts were quite disturbing and made you think of the lengths you would go to to get even with someone who killed your family, not for family viewing, but good none the less.

I really enjoyed watching this film and it was the first time I have seen it to. I thought that Tom Jane and John Travolta were superb in their roles in this film.
It is a story of revenge and also about one man's fight to provide justice against all the evil, corruption and crime.
Brilliant storyline, excellent fast paced action and superb acting. It makes you think what you would do in the same situation as Tom Janes's character in the film. I am so pleased i finally brought it at a bargain price to.
Highly recommended to everyone. 5/5

i first saw this film on sky movies last year and i loved it. i had planned to buy it but couldnt find it in any shops so when i came across it on e bay i just had to buy it. the story is a bit disturbing. john travola plays a bad guy which was weird. but played a brilliant part. the guy who played frank castle was brilliant and very sexy (haha bonus) ala in all thou i think this film is deffinatly one to watch if you havent seen it. enjoy

the quality is good and it meant we had a nice night in with a curry and this movie.
The seller was very very helpful and I would not hesitate in using them again.

Great film, very violent though, with lots of blood and use of knives, swords & guns!
It's a great film with good actors also but I just feel with John Travoltor in it, it seems to similar to Face Off as it's all about revenge for family been killed!

Those who remember the terrible 1989 version starring Dolph Lundgren can rest assured that this time they’ve got it right. Deep Blue Sea’s Thomas Jane takes the lead as bitter ex-cop Frank Castle, righting wrongs with bullets and bombs, a pro-active enemy of injustice with nothing left to lose after his entire family is massacred by ice-cold mobster Howard Saint (John Travolta). Vengeance is sworn, plans are hatched, and lives are taken one by one as Castle sets about obliterating Saint’s criminal empire. Jane and Travolta are extremely well matched as hero and villain, both firmly committed to their cause, be it justice or evil. Either way, heads roll. It’s a brutal, gory film, no doubt about that, a welcome return to the unapologetically over-the-top style of Eighties actioners. Like those earlier movies it’s also very funny, not always deliberately but either way it works, a wild, outrageous ride full of thrills and bloody spills. Best of all the battles is an extended scuffle between Castle and a hulking Russian assassin (Kevin Nash), as nasty as it is hilarious. Just add popcorn.
