You know when a film has achieved true cult status when an internet page springs up with a test that asks 'Find out which <insert fim title> character you are. The Princess Bride has achieved such lofty heights. And rightly so it is a brilliant and charming family film. Basically a love story between the Bride of the film's title, Buttercup, and her young beau Wesley. But this film offers so much more. As you follow the adventures of Buttercup as she becomes unwittingly embroiled in the politiking between two fictional countries; Floren and Guilder, and is kidnapped by one of the most inept trios going, you root for her saviour, Wesley, as he defys the infamous dread pirate roberts and her would be kidnappers in order to rescue her and you experience romance, intrigue, revenge, comradeship, adventure and rodents of unquestionable size all along the way. This is a simple straightforward film and my entire family have fallen for this friendly inoffensive movies charm. Plus it easily stands up to repeated viewing. There are cameos from Mel Smith and a heavily made up Billy Crystal and there is a gentle soundtrack from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straights. Plus the enigmatic and totally brilliant Christopher Guest (of Spinal Tap fame) is the six fingered baddie. What more could you want? Essentially just a lovely sunday afternoon movie for when everyone is sat on the sofa.
