I loved this modern version of Jane Austen's classic novel even more than the longer tv version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle which was so acclaimed. For me the cast in this shorter version played the characters so much more convincingly.
Kiera Knightly was outstanding as the spirited Elizabeth, conveying accurately her confusion over what she really thinks and feels about Mr Darcy, and finally the realisation of her true feelings. Matthew MacFadyen was fantastic as Mr Darcy with his repressed arrogant personality, prejudice and awkwardness at dealing with his growing feelings towards Elizabeth. He also had the ability to convey in increasing intensity Mr Darcy's innermost vulnerability and desire throughout, building up to the wonderful and touching ending.
The supporting cast are equally as good, especially Donald Sutherland as Elizabeth's father. He is wonderful at conveying the humour of the character, and the moment when he realises Elizabeth has found someone she truly loves is very touching. Brenda Blethyn is excellent and believable as Mrs Bennett, with her desperation to marry off all her daughters.
Overall, it is a charming film not to be missed.
