Pretty Woman (DVD 2001)

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts co-star in this wonderful romantic comedy. When Edward Lewis, a rich industrialist played by Richard Gere, searches to locate his Beverly Hills hotel, he encounters Vivian Ward, a Hollywood prostitute played by Julia Roberts. Vivian is suddenly swooped up into an extremely rich fantasy world, when she is hired by Edward Lewis as a date for an entire week.

Julia Roberts is perfect in her role as a prostitute, taken into a world where anything you could desire is just a call away. She usually has only enough clients to just get her rent paid while living with her drug-addicted roommate. Since Vivian did not graduate from high school, she has chosen prostitution as the only way of getting a higher paying job, rather than working in fast food restaurants.

But now with Edward Lewis in her life, Vivian is living in a hotel suite that has a bathroom as big as her entire apartment and many people to wait on her hand and foot. As Edward Lewis's date, she has to dress the part and encounters the snobbish, Hollywood culture of Rodeo Drive. After being asked to leave an exclusive boutique, Vivian is totally lost and does not know how to learn to dress and eat at a high class restaurant. She desperately asks the help of the hotel manager at the Beverly Hills Hotel where she and Lewis are staying. The manager decides to come to her aid in order to please Lewis, one of his best customers. Later, the hotel boutique manager works with Vivian changing everything about her appearance from hair to shoes, giving her a stunning and elegant look.

Richard Gere is very convincing as Edward Lewis, showing a cool calculating manner that is totally involved in winning his business deals. He spends day and night on the phone, planning his next move and meeting with his lawyer, not even taking a day off. But that changes when Vivian enters the picture.

Both Edward Lewis and Vivian Ward come from extreme ends of society and could not be more different. However, they do share one thing in common; they both use their clients in a cold, unemotional manner. But later on, what begins as a business contract quickly evolves into much, much more.

This a delightful, romance that will keep you guessing from moment to moment what is happen next with this odd couple of fascinating people.

This is my all time ,favourite film. Julia Roberts may have had better acting parts in other films but she is simply adorable in this.Her chemistry with Richard Gere is really something. The plot is dopey but who cares, as a better feelgood movie you would be hard pressed to find.

Having seen this film about 100 times already I had to buy another copy for a friend of mine. It simply is the best film ever made. It shows that money certainly cant buy love and happiness however the growing love that blossoms between the two characters is so beautiful because of their such difference in lifestyles. He's a wealthy business man and shes a "hooker" but he shows her that life can be different and that she is more than just a "hooker". I love this film because you can see how in love the characters become "no kissing on the mouth". The only thing I disliked about this film is the ending, we assume they leave together but I would have liked to have known for sure. The film makes you fall in love with the characters and you keep wanting more. Excellent film and worth watching 100 times more.

great film, good story, acting & choice of actors, always impressed when i watch the film, gives me & the wife that feel good factor when we cuddle up on a cold winters evening to watch this one, it never dissapoints & we can always rely on it to cheer us up, a modern classic which stands the test of time, i urge anyone who has never seen it to dim the lights, close the curtains, cuddle up to a loved one when it's cold & raining outside & simply enjoy

This has to be one of my all time favourite films - I have never counted how often I've watched it! Its such a nice film and obviously and happy ending always helps! Julia Roberts is just gorgeous in this and Richard Gere is to die for!

This is one of my favourite films, and I'd already seen it numerous times before buying it on DVD. It has a real feel-good factor about it. Quite apart from the stunning Julia Roberts and the good-looking Richard Gere, there is also Hector Elizondo who plays the understated hotel manager who quietly and efficiently gets on with his job. There are some brilliant comedy moments such as Gere saying to Elizondo "I think we both know she's not my niece!" There is also Jason Alexander who plays the instantly dislikeable lawyer, and his increasing incredulity that his high powered client seems to be taking multi million dollar deals with such a pinch of salt.

All in all, a great film.

I love this film and when I saw it on DVD I though it was about time I bought it. I used to own the video but for some mad reason I sold it at a car boot sale. This film sums up everything that a classic film should be. Classy actor, new girl in film, great plot, non-drowsy storyline and a beautiful ending which makes me cry each time I see it!

Pretty Woman is all about Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), who is a prostitute on Hollywood Boulevard. Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is a hard-nosed businessman who picks up Vivian after he gets lost and asks her for directions. He decides to pay for her for the night and afterwards asks her to stay for the week so that she can accompany him to some posh parties.

This is a classic story of a girl, down on her luck, getting the chance to start over again. Edward, likewise, feels disillusioned with his life and constant cut throat business deals and sees Vivian as a welcome change.

The best bits in the film make it so worthwhile. The first time Vivan enters Edward's hotel and gets into the lift. She manages to sit open legged on the couch in the lift and the middle aged man outside gets told to "close your mouth dear" by his wife.

The most triumphant part of the film and my favourite has to be Vivian going into a fancy clothes boutique on Rodeo Drive for the second time. The first time she gets booted out because she is still wearing her street clothes. She walks in in a stunning dress and hat, laden with desginer shopping bags and asks the assistants if they remember her. They don't and are so shocked when she tells them who she is. Classic 'girl power' film moment of all time.

The DVD itself isn't bad at all. There are a few extras and deleted scenes but the best extra is the Wild Women Do music video which I absolutely loves and totally sums up the film and who I think it the star of the film, Julia Roberts. This was Julia's first big hit and I believe this film put her on the map as a Hollywood star. I do think maybe some interviews with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere would have been a nice touch as a DVD extra.

I really don't think there is one part of this film that I don't like as all the storylines fit together and the acting is superb. It's a total feelgood movie and I strongly recommend it as girls night in or a date movie for sure.

I just watch it because I love it and I would seriously recommend that everyone watches this film once.

The ending is one only dreams are made of. Vivian finally gets rescued by her knight in shining armour (or white limousine).

My advice is watch this film and try to prove me wrong!

One of the best films ever made, funny and moving at the same time.
Already have on VHS but having watched it so many times it's getting worn out so replacing with the DVD.

i had this film on video when it first came out, but it got damaged, i was looking for something else and came accross pretty woman on dvd, i couldn't belive the price, it arrived very quickly, it works great my daughter watched it with me and liked it, it was the first time she'd seen it. the seller was great let me know when they had posted it, so i had a rough idea when it would arrive, the purchase for this was great

WHAT CAN I SAY! Gere is awesome Roberts is wicked, laughs, tears and a whole lot more, Classic Chick Flick everyone should own a copy of this dvd.

this dvd is one of the best girly rom coms i've seen, and even though its a few years old now it's still a dvd you can watch time and time again

A typical 'Cinderella' love story but fun to watch. Good for a rainy Saturday afternoon with a glass of wine when you don't want anything heavy or intense.

A feel good factor film purchased for a relaxing evening, - total switch off. Igniting memories of the past, good music a simple but heartwarmimg story.

i bought it because its a classic girls night in film that every woman should have a copy of in there video or dvd collection. we;d been looking for it for a while in HMV etc but it was still expensive so we bought it from here

Great film i love it could watch it again and again this is something you just have to buY! This is better then going on a world tour. And Gere looks real hot in it :P! funny entertainment. 10 outa 10

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes
