The Pretenders - The Singles (CD 1987)

If, like me, you're a fan of Chryssie Hynde's haunting, plaintive tones, the band's punchy baselines and melodious guitar riffs, or you simply find yourself recalling with fondness the rock scene of the late seventies/early eighties, or you're too young to remember it and you're sorry you missed it in the first place, you'll really appreciate this anthology of their 45s. Hearing them in succession like this makes you aware of the subtle changes in style that occurred over the years, but the over-riding consistent factor is the tight musicianship that characterised this great rock and roll band. The only downside is the rather out-of-character inclusion of "I've Got You Babe", Chryssie's joint venture with UB40; it very much comes across as something of an afterthought - switch off after track 15, the memorable "My Baby" for a lasting effect.
