Pirates of Penzance, tells the tale of an unusually noble and genteel band of pirates and their young apprentice Frederic.
His 'coming-of-age' soon turns sour , however, when he announces he's leaving the pirates to join the police.
Is it the end of their existence?
The show opened with a colourful and hilarious scene of the pirate ship Tarantara arriving in a secluded cove. The movement of the ship supposedly being tossed by the ocean, with one of the pirates hanging onto the rigging, swaying precariously provoked much laughter.
Frederick (Alex Linney) had a pleasing voice and he obviously enjoyed his role.
Phil Birkett as the Pirate King gave his portrayal of the charming blackguard with a knowing swagger while hinting at the lost orphan within.
The female chorus who were the Major Generals daughters all had good voices and played their roles with lots of vitality. Astrid Moules as Mabel the eldest daughter had a powerful voice and her duet with Frederic was delightful.
Trevor Impey as the Major General played the part with humor and energy.
The police squad under their Sergeant (Marc Taylor) are all to be congratulated for their extremely funny scenes.
The hilarity was constant throughout the performance with amusing banter between the actors and the orchestra.
The scenery was simple but effective, the costumes were colourful all helping to make this an excellent production. It's too good to miss.

i've always been a fan of g&s and this is my favourite of all their works.
this is just a lively show with many great songs, the cast perform so well
and seem to enjoy themselves. i will be looking for more shows on dvd

I bought this DVD because I wanted to learn the music and something of the setting before auditioning for a role. In that way the DVD was very useful and the vocal quality is great.
I have seen a more recent production also that also had excellent vocals but that came second to the characterisation of each of the roles. This DVD seems to have excellent singers but not actors.
All in all I would say that it is an entertaining show with excellent vocals, but is a very straight production that doesn't take advantage of all the witty and clever lines written so long ago, but still brilliantly fresh and funny when performed as “Characters that sing” rather than Opera singers singing beautifully but missing the character and comedy potential..
Just my opinion tho !

Pirates of Penzance (Universal Studios)
) Large sections of this,and it's companion G&S DVD's, have been poorly dubbed.
The result being that the mouths of the singers are out of step with the sound.
It's like watching an original Russian film which has been overlaid with an English translation.
I'm suprised that Universal Studios could release such rubbish.

) I love the slightly silly story-lines in all G&S comic operas. The music is catchy and stays in my head for hours afterwards, the costumes are flamboyant and fun. All Gilbert & Sullivan operettas are good, but this one has always been my favourite.
Easy listening, lovely colourful scenes and totally unlikely story-line.

I bought this because my daughter was learning one of the songs for her Grade 2 Cornet exam. It gave her an understanding of the song and the context. We enjoyed watching it as a family as we enjoy anything with pirates in, especially The Policeman's Song. You can choose the scene you want to watch and there is an index of songs as well. It is the DVD of an opera in the stage version, not a produced film.
