Can you imagine the pitch meeting for this film? 'We've written a story based on a DisneyLand theme park ride. Please give us some money to make this film.' Someone certainly took a big risk but it definately paid off.
Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) wants to rescue his ladylove, Governer's daughter, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly) who has been kidnapped by these Pirates and is being held aboard their ship The Black Pearl.
Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is the former Captain of the Black Pearl who wants revenge on his former first mate Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) for committing mutiny and leaving him to die on a desert island.
Barbossa has kidnapped Elizabeth because she had the Aztec Medallion that he needs to lift the curse that is upon his ship and crew. (They stole the cursed Aztec gold and now live in a kind of undead state of perpetual torment until they lift the curse)
Unfortunately for Barbossa, Elizabeth stole the Medallion from Will when they were children (Long story. it makes sense when you watch the film) and it's actually Will's blood that they need to lift the curse. Something Jack Sparrow knows all too well.
Jack and Will have to work together to achieve their respective goals. Throw into the mix some scary pirates, some comical pirates, The Royal Navy Commadore Norrington (Miles from This Life) who has two ambitions in life, One is to Marry Elizabeth and the other is to see Jack Sparrow either Shot of Hanged, (He has an unhealthy dislike of all Pirates) and Elizabeth's father Governer Swann who just wants his daughter to settle down and stop galavanting about the Ocean with these Pirate types and you get the general picture.
The script is incredibly well written and funny. Johnny Depp gets the best lines ('You look somewhat familiar, have i threatened you before?') but there are also plenty for his sidekick Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly's 'You like Pain? Try wearing a Corsett.' was used in all the trailers.
There are sword fights a plenty but Jack and Will's Blacksmith's shop duel at the start and the battle between Jack and Barbossa at the end are the best. And there's also Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom for the girls to look at and Keira Knightly for the lads. Keira's in her undergarments for the most part but don't get too exited. it's set in the high days of the British empire when underwear basically means a thin white dress.
Now you'd expect me to close with some kind of comment such as 'Drink up me hearties yo ho' but i wont. All that is really left for me to say is 'Oh and Will? Nice Hat.

  Utter Insanity!
Review created: 25/07/06

I love it. The whole thing is hysterically amusing, and simply terrific fun to watch; one of the most entertaining big releases I've seen for years. Total nonsense of course, but massively entertaining; people of all ages can find something to enjoy here, if only to spot how many films the writers have parodied. Tongue in cheek is very firmly the order of the day here.

The acting is of an extremely high standard -Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly are excellent in their own roles, Jonathan Pryce has his own unique presence, even in a notionally 'nice' role like this, and everyone clearly had a great time. Even the more minor characters were superb. Beautifully stylised, and realised by people who believe in a sense of professionalism.

But OK, like everyone else, I'll say it. What really lingers in the mind makes this film is Johnney Depp's magical performance, mincing about in dark eyeshadow and liner, with a South African accent that also blends shots of Irish and God-only-knows what into it. Where on Earth did that come from? It's utterly manic, in the best possible way. Mesmerising. Eveyone is over-the-top; as you'd expect from such a film, but his takes things to another level, whilst retaining complete artistic integrety.

The direction is very impressive. It helps that the script is good, with tightly written dialogue, and a sense that there was a desire to include everything that could possibly be thrown in to make the best possible entertainment without crippling the story by too many additional subplots.

Pacing is about right for individual scenes, though I'd probably try to loose about 15 minutes from the total length -it's a little over-long for the story as it stands, but some clever editing would sort that without damage to the whole. There's great flare shown, delightful humour in presentation, and it moves fluidly, with little slowing of the generally very brisk pace. The effects (visual and audio) and stunts are frequently extremely amusing, and also invariably of a high standard -very good indeed, as you'd expect from a Disney release: they have a reputation for firing cash at wheir productions to get them looking and sounding right, and this is probably the best example so far. There's huge full-range sound, retaining massive energy down to 20Hz, and great dynamic swings, with little evidence of compression. Oh yes, the score is very well-matched to the film too, superbly played, and loaded with deliberate melodrama. Very entertaining.

The DVD issues are all good, superbly mastered, with a delightfully crisp picture quality, lovely colour, and very nicely mixed sound, with a good balance between music / effects and dialoge, which is usually crystal clear. The 2 and 3 disc sets are best, primarily because they are now very cheap -only a little more than the regular release, so why not. They're stuffed with extras, and very nicely presented. The third disc in the triple disc edition is perhaps going a little too far, but that's the one I bought, simply because it cost me no more than the regular release[s].

Is it the greatest film ever? Of course not, and I doubt anyone would pretend it is. 2001: A Space Odyssey is is not. But it is vastly entertaining, and oddly, actually supports repeat viewings, which you can't say about many monster releases. At the very low prices now charged, it'd be a shame not to indulge yourself in a bit of sheer escapism.

  PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Review created: 07/01/07
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Loosely inspired by the a Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When camp Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, hes in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeths childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearls mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeths doubloon necklace, and when shes kidnapped by the ol salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ships curse. Verbinskis PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, theres lots of humour to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film.

Great film left me laughing for hours.

Wheres is all the rum gone?
Review created: 18/02/07

When it was first announced, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest brought a mixture of responses with it. Some said that the first instalment, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, did not need a sequel; it started brilliantly and finished perfectly. Others rejoiced: "Another Pirates of Caribbean? That's got to be the flick of the year!" But, as ever with sequels the big question was; is it as good as the first one? The answer to that question is not a simple one.

Dead Man's Chest is the follow up to one of the biggest surprise hits of 2003. The Curse of the Black Pearl had virtually no hype behind it and no-one expected too much from it. But they were all wronged as Pirates turned (or should I say Turner-ed!) out to be an amazing film of true quality; it made swash-bucklers more than cool. To put it simply, I could just say that there aren't many people now who look blank or don't smile when they hear the name Jack Sparrow being mentioned.
And now Dead Man's Chest takes off from where the original left off, in a hope to be a similar, if not better success. The film begins on the day of William Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann's (Keirra Knightly) wedding. The occasion however, is rudely interrupted by the arrival of the East Indian Trading Company, who, upon arrival arrest William and Elizabeth in consequence to them allowing the wanted pirate Jack Sparrow - sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow - to go free. They are both under the penalty of death, but Will is sent to get Jack's compass from him, Jack, while his `bonny lass' is left behind in jail. From there the story takes you to many places; some familiar - Tortuga - while some unfamiliar, such as Cannibal Island; and many humorous, action packed and altogether memorable, adventures ensue.
The film follows a similar template, as it were, to its predecessor; there is a lot of chasing around with ships across the Caribbean as each character follows his own journey and then reunites with another. Also, there are several references to some of the classic jokes from the Curse of the Black Pearl, for example a certain character asks "Why is the rum always gone?"
But this does not mean the story is similar - because it is not. Dead Man's Chest takes a more `mythical' and darker turn with the ship that plunges under the sea, The Flying Dutchman, which is captained by the sinister Davy Jones and his crew of coral creatures, not to mention the Scandinavian legend; the Kraken: a horrific giant sea beast with many tentacles well capable of destroying a ship, as you'll find out!

The films ends leaving you with questions, and also there is a huge link to the Curse of the Black Pearl, right at the end which of course I won't give away, but the film ends on a cliff hangar. Yes that's right, after about two and a half hours worth of action suspense, lots of talking and generally great cinematography you are left with a cliff hangar! This of course does not make the film bad. In fact it makes it better as overall it's a great film that's bound to have you stuck to your seat the whole way through, whether you've got your breath held with tension or whether your laughing at a ridiculous moment. Though, it must be said, the answer to the ominous question asked at the beginning of this review is "No". But only just. It may be great but it's not greater than the Curse of the Black Pearl. All I can say is roll on Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End

  SIMPLY THE BEST

Johnny Depp is brilliant as Captain Jack Sparrow - he definitely steals the show. Saying that Captain Barbarosa plays the similar bad role as played by Alan Rickman in both Die Hard and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. They both manage to make you end up feeling empathy for the bad guy and not wanting to see him lose.
Whatever has happend to Johnny Depp in the last few years he needs to continue doing - in both this film and Once Upon a Time in Mexico he steals the show.
Watch this if you thought Master and Commander lacked a certain something

This film is packed with tons of action and humour with fantastic acting. Johnny Depp is absolutely hilarious as Captain Jack Sparrow , an eccentric rogue, who plays fantastically opposite Orlando Blume.

This is a must see film! Watch it now before the sequal arrives in 2006.

Pirates Of The Caribbean - The Curse Of The Black Pearl
Review created: 10/04/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pirate pictures are poison. Yellowbeard, Pirates, CutThroat Island - all sank to the bottom of the box office, weighed down with critical bile.

Factor in Gore Verbinski's workmanlike reputation and a theme park ride for source material and Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (deep breath) looks as attractive as the Elephant man.

So, brace the mainsail and shiver those timbers, etc, for this is a superb swashbuckler - rousing, funny and spectacular.

"This is either madness or brilliance," says Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), as he and Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) attempt to steal a ship and rescue the governor's daughter (Keira Knightley). The statement could easily be ascribed to Depp's eccentric, ecstatic performance, and as the singular skipper replies, "It's remarkable how often those two traits coincide."

Depp simply steals the show, lock, stock and two floating barrels. Foppish, fey and hilarious, Sparrow is a brilliant creation - a self-publicising rogue with the élan of Douglas Fairbanks and the demeanour of an acid casualty.

Faced with his scene-snaffling, the others do well to register. Bloom has a Flynn-ish quality (if a touch goodie goodie) as Knightley's squeeze, while the young British actress (Bend It Like Beckham) appears effortlessly charismatic.

Marginally less photogenic, Geoffrey Rush is no less impressive as the villainous Captain Barbossa, questing to lift the curse on the crew of the notorious Black Pearl.

His dialogue is gloriously grandiose ("Compelled by greed we were and now we are consumed by it!"), but always underscored by the wit you'd expect from the writers of Shrek and The Mask Of Zorro.

The latter is a stylistic touchstone for this story of seabound skulduggery - which matches its playful tone, splendid swordfights and cheerful disposability. And while Pirates may be as overlong as its franchise-minded title, the characters are so engaging, the action so entertaining, you won't really care. Yo ho ho, indeed.

Depp is the true star of this movie. True Kiera looks stunning and there's some cool undead wandering around but Depp steals the show. If you need to 'Swashle your Buck' and 'man the main brace' this is the movie for you. Action, adventure, pirates, swords, cannon, monsters, maidens in distress and treasure, everything you need for a fun night in!!

This film has to be one of those films rather u like it or you dont.I loved this film as i thought it had been well written and acted by the cast, some familiar faces appear like George Rush,Johnny Depp who plays a Pirate and i think he was made for that role.
Superb special effects and decent storyline.I couldnt believe that the makers of this film had taken so long to make it.
But all in all i simply loved the film and even my Nice and Nephew did as well
i highly recomend this film to anyone who like me like a action film with a bit of romance in it.

Adventures, Fun and Action, a Delight
Review created: 16/07/06

Probably the best pirate movie to date. And it is not only a pirate story because the ‘curse’ thing brings another dimension to the film – which the CGI craft renders dazzlingly. There is love, distant adventures on dream-like seas, islands and harbors, a lot of ferocious battles along the way, and as many twists and turns in the script.

The tone (and directing) is light-hearted and heroic, unpredictable and definitely spectacular. It’s not only a wonderful entertainment, it is even witty and spirited. And of course, and foremost, with his creative sensitivity Johnny Depp brings the most exquisitely peculiar pirate ever seen on screen. ‘Savvy?’

I don’t say that very often (because it is each to his own taste) but I believe if you seek a right down good enjoyable time before the screen, this one is really not to be missed.

This film is amazing! It's so funny and the story line is brilliant. The thing I found really funny was that you couldn't tell if Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) was gay or really drunk. The effect were brilliant as well, you can see every detail on the pirats when they are walking under water. The charactors are to die for as well, they all have their silly funny moments as the story of Bootstrap Bill's son finds his way back to the Black Pearl and the treasure.
This is a must see film for anyone of any age, I can't wait to see the next one.

This is a romance/war film. It has a good cast including Johnny Depp, Keira knightly and Orlando Bloom.

It's about a the relationship between Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and the black pearl but also the love tale of elizabeth Swan (Keira knightly) and Will turner (Orlando Bloom).

A TOTAL must see if you like pirates, explosions, love, scandle and a lot of gold. (and for the girls: a lot of drooling)

Pirates of the Carribean - The blessing on my screen
Review created: 24/10/05
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This movie was one of the best films - if not the best film - of 2003. It now has pride of place as one of my all time favourite films ever, and believe you me, that's not easy to achieve.

The fact that it received 5 Academy Awards Nomination, including best Actor for Johnny Depp, is a "subtle" hint at what to expect. This movie has it all.
Kidnapping, Romance, Adventure, Treasures, Curses, Redemption, Comedy, Sword fights and Zombies. Absolutely FANTASTIC.

And if that wasn't enough to get your attention, you have a brilliant selection of Cast: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlnado Bloom and Keira Knightly. This is a movie that will appeal to everyone. Adults and kids alike would love to watch it a few times (I know I did)

And one more reason to make sure you have this in your collection, there's Part 2: Pirates of the Carribean - The dead Man's Chest scheduled to come out in the near future 2006 and as you can tell, I can barely control my excitement at that bit of news. And if it's anything like the first, I'll tell you all about it.
