Pink Martini - Hey Eugene (CD 2007)

China Forbes and the ensemble sizzle their way through a variety of lyrics written in numerous languages. The professionalism of the band is breathtaking. This is an easy listening album that never ceases to surprise and delight no matter how often you hear it. It's equally appropriate to listen to it closely on your own or to use it to provide stimulating background mood music, although the later is perhaps almost unforgivable given the talent of the band. Whatever the circumstances,the CD guarantees to lift the spirits. Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of the band is their sheer versatility. If you're looking for a CD to set a particulr mood, then this one's not for you as the tempo changes as frequently as the language. The opening track 'Everywhere' written by vocalist China Forbes and Thomas M. Lauderdale has a distinctly timeless feel to it but if pushed to place it in a particular era you'd probably plump for the 1940s It's a beautifully rendered ballad that's just the kind of song you believe you must have heard before a million times. In direct contrast to the tempo of this track, the second offering, 'Tempo Perdito' is latin in feel and evokes salsa and carnival. Just the sort of track that defies you to stay in your seat!
