Pink Floyd at their very best

One of the most successful albums of all time, with over 35 million copies sold to date.

I love this album from start to finish, with great, memorable songs woven together in the unmistakeable Pink Floyd style. Includes classics such as 'Money', which is still a foot stomping tune even if the lyrics are now slightly dated. 'The Great Gig in the Sky' is instantly recognisable for its sweeping, minor key, agonised female vocal (used for a Neurofen ad for a while), and "Us and Them" is a simple, elegant melody that blends perfectly with the guitars and the chorus. Finally, "Brain Damage" is a glorious conclusion to the entire musical landscape.

An essential component of any self respecting musical collection - this album has stood the test of time and is one of the truly great musical creations of the 1970s.

A strong contender for the greatest album of all time

'Dark Side of the Moon' spent over 14 years in the US Billboard charts and has a total of nearly 7 years in total in the British album charts, making it the longest and 5th longest chart runs ever respectively for any album. Now chart success doesn't necessarily equate to artistic greatness, but this album is widely acclaimed as a true classic.
The music runs continuously, each song merging into the next (except for one break - this was an LP release originally), all on the general theme of life and its trials. The tracks themselves are superb, ranging from (almost) straightforward rock songs like 'Money'(a US top 20 single with some very neat time changes) and 'Time', through languid accoustic tracks like 'Breathe in the Air' and 'Brain Damage', to the almost transcendental 'Great Gig in the Sky' featuring an incredible lyricless vocal performance from the initially uncredited Clare Torry. And then there is the frankly psychotic 'On the Run' with its fast paced cyclic rhythm and explosive crescendo.
But what really makes this album great is the addition of various sound samples such as manic laughter, screams, chiming clocks, looped cash registers, a heartbeat, and - most notably - various quotes such as 'I know I'm mad. I've always been mad, like most of us are' and 'There is no dark side of the moon really. As a matter of fact it's all dark'. These were apparently responses to a series of questions on a card which were put to various people in and around the studio, and the inclusion of these was the icing on the cake.
The production is far better than anything else of the period and introduced a whole new experience to multi channel listening. To this day it still sounds incredible on a set of headphones.
Even though many of the songs are excellent on their own merits, it is the whole album as opposed to its parts that gives the most gratifying results. This is an absolutely essential part of any serious music collection. Enjoy...

Much Of Everything Else In The Rock Genre

sounds superficial by comparison, once you've digested the entire contents of DSOTM. The quality of this Pink Floyd masterpiece (and not the only one) cannot be underestimated. Roger Water's lyrics hit you hard with his uncompromising thoughts on society's bad points and how it can often drive people mad or to despair. Consequently there is a strong emotional side to the words and music running throughout the album. Somehow it all seems even more poignant today then it was back in 1973.

'On The Run' depicts the vision of the human rat race superbly. 'Us And 'Them' does similar for the divisive effect of modern society. 'Money' illustrates how much of a slave we all become to the legal tender and consumerism. 'Brain Damage' uses Syd Barratt as an example (without naming him) of someone who couldn't cope with society's demands. One reference is to him playing a different song to the rest of the band while on stage.

Although some of the songs stand up on their own merit, DSOTM really has to be listened to as a whole entity to obtain the maximum benefit. The measure of true art is how well a work survives the test of time in appreciation. So many people in all different parts of the world appreciate DSOTM, and most, like myself believe that DSOTM is every bit as good now as it was then. It's certainly as relevant. So I reckon it qualifies as a work of art.

Essential listening.

Must have bought this album at least three times. If ever there was an album that can stand the test of time, it's this one. Sounds as good today as it ever did. Timeless songs such as "Money" "us and them" will make you feel you have missed out on decades of music if listening to this album for the first time.If your thinkig of buying this album, do so. It will be the best investment you make.

Have loved Pink Floyd since a young age and wanted to rekindle old memories as my wifes son plays their music in a group called CODA.This prompted me to buy more albums from ebay.Ebay is the best way to buy as the prices are so competitive and is a very safe and quick way medium.

What can you say about this cd that hasn't been said already? Probably the best album EVER! I first heard this over thirty years ago when a student at university and it still sounds as good today as then. My sons took my copies (and kept them!) so hence the replacement.Every home should have one.

  Dark side of the Moon
Review created: 29/08/09

A timeless classic that can enhance any evening spent at home either alone or in company . Can be listened to as a piece of music in it's own formidable right or as background to group gathering. Will enhance mood and in the right circumstances lives up to it's title and can transport the listeners to the dark side of the moon. Can be listened over and over and on each occasion you can detect some instrumental challenge that you may not have previously heard.
A worthwhile addition to any music collection that most people will enjoy and some will find explosive. A true classic

For this great work of music my words would only lessen it. It covers big themes about the meaning of life, time and money and is so relevant to this year as when it was first written.

Nostalgia? I am digitalising my old record collecttion.
Review created: 05/07/09

I do not require any more gadgets to lie unused around my house. So, instead of buying a digital record deck, to copy my collection of music from the 60s and 70s, I am buying the titles on disc, as I find them for sale. I realise that condition of the discs can be dissapointing when relying in sellers description, but on the whole, have not been robbed by anyone yet.

Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon"
Review created: 04/03/09

I purchased a c.d. by "Pink Floyd" Dark Side of the Moon,. When I recieved it, it was not in a sealed cover. I played it on a couple of occasions but it missed on some of the tracks.
I suspected it to be a Pirate copy, it was listed as "New", but it was not. I contacted the seller but they said that it was listed "As New" but it was not.
I returned it for a refund which was given straight away.
The reason I purchased it it the first place was to replace taped recording, wish I had never bothered
