There's a definite roots influence and even a little alt-country going on here. Produced by Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Keith Richards) and including an appearance by The Memphis Horns, this recording has The Phoids smoothing out some of that blow-the-doors-out barroom rock heard on their previous recordings. Of course, they didn't smooth it out completely. When lead singer Jac Calabro lets his voice rip, as on "Ride It Out," it's a little bit Springsteen, a little bit Westerberg, and a lot of alcohol, tobacco and firearms. Yet with the addition of mellotron and even an elementary school chorus, this is still a surprising turn for these road warriors.
