With the VIDEO Plus+ system, all you need to do to program your video recorder is to enter the 'Pluscode' a single code of up to nine digits (but usually less) that is printed next to each TV program in most TV guides.

Simply plug in your device to the USB port on your Philips DVD system. Your digital music and photos will be played directly from the device. Now you can share your favourite moments with family and friends.

High speed archiving lets you make a copy of a recording from Hard Disk to DVD in a fraction of the original recording time. Once the programme is stored on HDD you can copy it to DVD+R/RW at maximum speed.

Philips DVD Recorders support 'dual media' recording - the ability to create recordings on DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs. Now you can buy any disc and the Philips recorder will always create fully compatible recordings, which can be played by any DVD player.

Multi-format playability allows you to play most file formats for maximum listening and viewing pleasure, including MP3, WMA, JPEG and the popular DivX digital media format. DivX playback enables you to play and share compressed high quality DivX video content beyond your computer.

Also known as IEEE 1394 and FireWire. i.LINK is the worldwide standard for connecting digital video devices, used on digital home video equipment such as DV and D8 camcorders, as well as PCs. Conveniently, it carries all audio and video signals via a single cable. With i.LINK Digital Video input you can copy your home videos in their original digital picture quality.

With Instant Replay you are in control of exciting TV moments so you can enjoy a precious TV moment like a scene in a movie or football match again immediately, at the press of a button. The Hard Disk can play back any scene while continuing to record TV program.

A very large built-in memory records the program you are currently watching when you press the pause button. When it suits you, you can resume the program from the moment you pressed 'pause' as if you're watching a live program.

I paid £295 pounds.

This unit has transformed the time it takes to get my camcorder films onto DVD. The unit is easy to use and reasonably feature packed. It has a 80Gb HD which seems more than adequate providing 130 hours recording time! Not treid the timer function yet to record TV, but the picture quality is good on recordings. Although its a region 2 unit, I found a hack code on the web and it is now operating as multi-region - took me 5 minutes to change via the handset and it worked first time! I bought a Philips model because a client company who use these for their security systems recommended this series. Do not buy a model prior to the 3400 though as those had bugs.

The only gripe with the unit is the time it takes to initialise when powering on, but I suspect this is the same for most or all units.

If you do not have a DVD recorder you will not go too wrong with one these. The E-bay transaction seemed to be a good one on this occasion, with my unit obviously a refurb (it came from a hotel in Tenerife I believe because I found one their notepads in the box!). The unit was in A1 condition when I received it and postage was quick.

I bought one of these on ebay about 5 months ago, and am so glad I did, I wanted a dvd recorder and when I was looking for one I noticed there were some with a Hard Disk Drive aswell, wasn't sure if I needed one, but now I wouldn't be without it. It automatically records the channel you are watching through the player so you can pause live tv, and it still records the programme you are watching, and at the touch of a button you can return to live tv. The only gripes I have is that it takes time to initialise, so if you forget to record your favourite program and try to do it quickly, it takes around ten seconds to go through its procedure before you can record. Also the remote has very small buttons, so if you are a bit optically challenged, you will be squinting to see the names on the buttons. If your remote gives out, you can't access anything on the player except playing a disc, so it renders your hdd useless, as I have just found out as my daughter has chewed the end and it no longer works. an expensive mistake to make as a new one is almost £30, a third of what I paid for the player. All in all I am very happy with it and as soon as I get my new remote I will be recording to hard disc again. Very glad I bought it and my small gripes are keeping it from the top marks. thanks for reading, hope this helps with your purchase, happy ebaying :-)

Quality product but there are problems.

I decided to buy this HDD because the price at £80 was excellent and the reviews were good.
The problems I find are:-
(a) the system is slow to react to the remote control set.
(b) the unit cannot function without the remote handset as there are no built in function buttons other than {power off/on} and {DVD open/close}, so do not lose or damage the handset and always have spare batteries at hand.
(c) I find that using video plus to record is slow because the handset buttons and descriptions are small and optically challenging.

Fortunately the good points far outweigh the problems previously described.
The quality of recording is excellent and transferring from HDD to DVD is seamless. Instant playback, DVD, and CD playing are excellent and I am therefore pleased with this product at the price I paid.

I wanted to upgrade to a HDD recorder from video but did not want to spend too much initially until I was more conversant with the technology.Initially I was tempted to get a sky plus box which I knew, from a friend, was very versatile but I wanted the facility to put content onto disc and after some research felt the philips met my needs but was pricey at around £190 in most stores.I then saw it at £90 & jumped straight in.Todate I have found the machine to provide most of what I want, the most disappointing feature being only able to record one sky channel at a time, that said the machine is quite versatile but I would advise anybody buying one to spend the time to get to know the machine & its functions to get the best from it.As a first foray into the world of HDD I am pleased with the choice.

This is an excellent piece of equipment. The picture quality is good. It is straight forward to use, although the instruction manual is little detailed.
It is great having the facility to watch a dvd while recording something off TV to HDD. The HDD menu system is very easy to use. Can't really comment on the reliability as I have only had the system 2 weeks. No problems with dvd freeze or jumping. The HD is easy to set up and looks good.

This product has one major problem. If you use SKy TV then you can only record the channels that you are watching at the current moment. YOu can not for example watch Discovery and record SKy sports. I though it would do this when I bought it rather like a sky + box. THe reason is that it picks up only ext 1 and the channel you are watching through ext 1 i.e. sky or freeview. If your tv has built in freeview then you might be able to record from the freeview channels whilst watching sky. The remote control has very small buttons and the options availbale for playback are very narrow offering simply go and stop. Ists cheap and cheerful but if I knew what I know now I wouldnt have bought it. Id recommend buying the same brand as your tv to minimise the amount of remote controls on the coffee table.

OK it's not got all of the features of the latest recorders and the hard drive is about half the size, but what it does it does well and at less than I could have paid for a DVD recorder with no hard disc it has to be considered a bargain. Recording to hard disc is simple and then transfer to DVD/R is equally easy making the 80g hard drive a non issue in my opinion, I recommend this product.

  Great product!!

This is a great product and I got it for a bargain price. I love the fact that you pause live TV. I have sky digital not sky+ so it's just like having that. I always use the HDD recorder and it's great that you just have to press a button no looking around for blank DVD's. The only downside I have with it is that it is a little slow when first turning on or when turning over channels but other than that hey what a product!!!

Phips dvd recorder with hard drive

At the price that this is available it would be hard to find any machine with more features. The reason I have rated it good as opposed to excellent is that the on screen display is not as good as my other recorder( a Yamada). The logic is not as straightforward either but the more you use it the more you get used to it.
