Phil Collins plays it safe ... and disappoints

Good old eBay led me to this Phil Collins album and I can honestly say I can’t recall any promotion upon its release. Sadly it seems the former Genesis drummer-turned-front man’s popularity had slipped more than I had realised. Let’s face it though: you either like Phil, hate him with a passion, blame him for “ruining” Genesis or like the odd tune but daren’t admit it!
For me (and in my opinion) Genesis was a great band that got better when Phil picked up the Mike. His first five solo albums are particular favourites of mine and therefore I think it is safe for me to be called a fan. The 1996 release “Dance Into the Light” was most disappointing so now aware that there was some new stuff out there I ordered with anticipation.
“Testify” is familiar soft rock territory for Phil Collins - it’s what he has always done best. However, although a much better release than his last I have to say that it is all rather familiar, rather nice and dare I say rather boring?
It plays without offence but doesn’t begged to be played repeatedly and I can see this sitting in the rack un-played for many a year.
