At last Mr Lloyd -Webber has put his music to movie! It is great - great singing and great acting and perfect for the big or little screen. I just wish more would follow.

I had seen Phantom on stage many years ago and then more recently took my 11 year old daughter to see it. Nothing beats a live show of course but coming out with the music ringing in our ears I decided to get the dvd. I was not sure that you could easily transfer Phantom to film but it is enjoyable, funny and sad, and of course the songs make you want to sing aloud. The main characters were surprisingly good but Minnie Driver as the Diva La Carlotta was a bad choice in my opinion. Great costumes, moody scenery - very enjoyable but try to see the live show first!

An outstanding film version of Andrew Lloyd Weber's classic stage production. My daughter just fell in love with it and sings all the songs to our distraction :) However, the songs and the acting are stunning and our next port of call will be to have a long weekend in London to see it live. Buy it and you will certainly not be disappointed.

I saw this film on Sky Movies and was totally swept away with the music. Curiosity made me buy this dvd as I wanted to know more about the actors and how this film had been put together. I wanted to know more about the original theatre production.
I found most of what I needed to know on the second disc. It was great!
I love this dvd so much, I have seen it over 60 times so far. Everything about it is amazing. Gerald Butler is the best!

Booked tickets to see Phantom of the Opera in London in December. My partner is not a fan of Opera so i bought this dvd for him to have a taste of what the show was about. He was completely taken with it and loved seeing the show.
The film version is well done-It doesnt distract too far from the original story but goes into more detail.

SUPERB! I had seen a few minutes of this on TV and was so captivated by it I just had to own it. I was not disappointed! The leads are so talented, and the atmosphere of the film is dark but at the same time enthralling. The music is amazing! Full of emotion. If you're not moved by this you must be dead from the neck up.

interesting to actually see the whole film. better than michael crawford version, dark film noir type of production with lighting emphasising the mystery of the phantom his craving for love, attention and although shunned still desperate for christine, attention , feeling sorry or not for him the cast provide an interesting story enhanced by the music there in

i have had to go and buy this film three times now, i kkeep lending it to people, and they never give it back!! the simple fact is loose any preconseptions you have of what this movie will be, because i even know big butch men who enjoy it.yes ok so theres a lot of singing, but it adds to this film not detracts.all i can say is just watch it , you may be pleasently suprised.

If you like musicals particularly those that have anything to do with Andrew Lloyd Webber music then this is an absolute must for you.
I bought this DVD because being a disabled person I find getting up to London to see these big shows is virtually an impossibility for me so to be able to watch a film of the stage version is the next best thing for me.
I would recommend this to anybody. It was a lovely show.

If you have seen the musical in theatre, you will love this DVD. As you would expect, the setting is stunning, the actors are good, and the music is fabulous, of course. The only issue I have is weird setting for the sound on the DVD. Works for the menu, but when the film plays is switches off and you have to re-set it for Dolby surround...

We got this because my daughter (11) had seen a snippet at my fathers house and was very keen to see the rest. I had no particular desire to see it, but was bowled over by the spectacle. I must admit it has put me off seeing the play as I dont know how it could live up to this. The only downside is for those that have to share a car with my daughter and I singing the very catchy tunes extremely badly.

The Phantom Of The Opera (DVD)
Review created: 25/02/09

Emmy Rossum stars as Christine Daae, a young dancer with the Opera Populaire in Paris. She has been having her voice trained by the mysterious 'Angel of Music' so when the Diva, Carlotta (brilliantly portrayed by Minnie Driver) storms out, Christine is propelled into the lead role of the opera house's latest production.
What Christine doesn't realise is that her angel of music is also the infamous Phantom and that he is obsessed with her. As Christine falls in love with her childhood sweetheart, Raoul de Chagny (Patrick Wilson), the phantom becomes increasingly unbalanced and determined to possess the young singer no matter what.
Joel Schumacher's glossy production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's best loved musical stars, for the most part, a relatively unknown cast, but that doesn't detract in any way from the quality of the film. Rossum was only 17 when this was filmed but she brings a remarkable maturity to her role and she has an incredibly good voice. Gerard Butler, who plays the phantom, doesn't have such a strong voice, but, thanks in the main to his sympathetic and sensitive portrayal of the tortured creature, he pulls it off. A real surprise was Jennifer Ellison (better known to British viewers as the young soap star from 'Brookside') who plays Meg, Christine's best friend. In this role, Ellison shows she can not only act but can sing very well too. Minnie Driver, cast as the spoiled, conceited Carlotta, injects humour and exuberance into her role. She is the only cast member who doesn't perform her own songs but you cannot tell this when watching the film.
As would be expected from such a production, the cinematography is outstanding, the costumes are sumptuous and the sets are marvellous. This DVD is presented over 2 discs. Disc 1 is the movie while disc 2 has a wealth of extras such as 'Behind the Mask; the story of Phantom of the Opera', various featurettes and several music videos taken from stage versions of the musical. For those willing to search, there are also some hidden extras; I have found 4 so far. Hours of entertainment to lose yourself in....brilliant.

The Phantom of the opera - You gotta love it
Review created: 22/02/09(updated 22/02/09)

Being a profound Thesbian and a lover of all things theatre, this film really did it for me. It's an incredible mix of great acting, fantastic singing, exquisite music (how does 5 chords create such tension and atmosphere? Oh the drama!!!) and impeccable composing and script writing all lovingly mixed in the solid gold, jewel encrusted pot that is "The Phantom of the opera". An absolute must see film that will have you singing LLoyd Webber's tunes for weeks on end. Highly recomended for anyone interested in the dramatic arts or music (or indeed anyone who can appreciate the fantastic singing (and, dare I add, good looks :D) of Gerard Buckler!). Happy ebaying! x x x
