I truly adored this DVD and I can honestly say that it got funnier each time I watched. The work of a true genius. The bingo-caller did it for me - on the floor in stiches every time. Fantastically funny DVD!

I just had to own this DVD as I am a huge fan of Peter Kay. Bolton's own produces a series of sketches which will have you laughing from start to finish. Kay plays a total of 15 characters in this 6 part series which was the forerunner for the hugely successful Phoenix Nights.

The DVD also includes the original pilot episode - The Services.

THIS IS A MUST NOT JUST FOR PETER KAY FANS BUT FOR COMEDY FANS IN GENERAL!

IF YOU LIKE PETER KAY, THEN THIS DEFINATELY HAS TO BE THE ONE TO WATCH, THERE ARE SOME MANY DIFFERENT SCENES TO WATCH AND HE IS TOTALLY BRILLIANT IN ALL HIS DIFFERENT ROLES. THIS WAS BEFORE PHOENIX NIGHTS, WHICH IS VERY GOOD AS WELL, BUT HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE BRILLIANT AND WELL WORTH WATCHING FOR A LAUGH FROM START TO FINISH. MR SOFTY TOP THE ICE CREAM MAN IS A BRILLIANT, WHO WANTS TO HANG UP HIS SCOOPS AND SENOR WHIPPY IS TAKING OVER HIS SPOTS, HAS TO BE SEEN.
WELL AND TRULY RECOMMENDED, YOU CAN STILL BUY THIS IN THE SHOPS, BUT IT DOES COST £19.99 SO IF YOU CAN BUY IT HERE, LIKE I DID, THEN DO IT, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED FOR ALL THOSE PETER KAY FANS......CHECK OUT HOW YOUNG HE LOOKS..

I bought this DVD because Peter Kay just cracks me up with his character(s) & the expression on his face and the effect he has on others.
Not really heard of him that much until I seen the 'Phoenix Nights' series then his 'Live' shows and then seen that he had 'That Peter Kay Thing' released and said to myself, why pay £10 or so in the high street when you 'shop' at E-Bay, the best online, get your purchases at half-price or more if you're lucky, and build up your feedback.

  Bound to become a classic

This DVD makes for an excellent addition to any comedy collection. Not just for Peter Kay fans, the characters and situations in these six half-hour episodes, will appeal to everyone with a sense of humour. Both funny and occasionally touching, the characters created for this show offer the same sort of grim-reality comedy as Little Britain or The Catherine Tate Show.

A key episode is that which focuses on the Phoenix Club - obviously the forerunner to Phoenix Nights - as it is a chance to see Brian Potter and his staff at their best.

The special features are also a must, mainly for the hilarious commentary and original pilot episode "The Services". The only thing missing are outtakes, and behind the scenes documentaries, which were so good on the Phoenix Nights DVD.

Overall, a brilliant buy, and something you'll want to watch over and over.

I loved every bit, Have been looking for copy of mr softy top ever since seeing it on tv. Peter has such good observation of the types of folk you see in day to day life. This kind of stuff is just what we all need to remember not to take life too serious.

I think this DVD is funny as hell, From the guy from my home town of Bolton, Mr softee the ice cream man i am in for around 2 secs ! "well i knew i would be famous one day" ;-)
Peter Kay plays 15 characters with Mr Softee the ice cream man...
Leonard the oldest paper boy in Britain...
Marc Park the egocentric pop star...
Phoenix Club owner Brian Potter and Max the hapless doorman.

You will just have to buy this DVD and just watch it, i am sure you will like it...and if you are from Bolton..maybe just maybe you might be on the DVD for just 2 secs just like me !

This is Peter Kay at his best in his earlier career. I particularly like it because it could pass for a serious documentary. It has to be watched several times to pick up all the innuendo's and to get the most out of the mad characters. He is a fantastic actor and comedian. Its great entertainment, one you can watch again and again. I'm a big fan of 'The League of Gentlemen' and this is of a similar nature, though not as dark. It's a series I love to go back to when there's nowt on box, always creates a good mood.

  Multiple personality genius!
Review created: 08/01/09
by:

I never liked Peter Kay. I saw a live show and I thought his stand up comedy was mediocre when compared to other live comedy acts. But the TV shows he has produced are where he shines. In his first TV outing "That Peter Kay thing" he portrays 15 different characters all of whom are central to each of the six stories featured in the series. The first is the basis for the series Phoenix nights, which was made soon after. Also featured are the characters Max and Paddy who also had their own spin off series.

If you have only seen Peter live forget it, this is brilliant!
