Album Notes
Coldplay: Guy Berryman, Jon Buckland, Will Champion, Chris Martin.Producers: Coldplay, Ken Nelson, Chris Allison.Recorded between November 1999 and May 2000.PARACHUTES won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. In 2000, a small wave of British pop bands clearly heavily influenced by Radiohead's brand of anthemic mope rock arose, with Travis, Muse, and Coldplay at the forefront. Coldplay are the most clearly Radiohead-like, compared to the poppier Travis and the more electronic-oriented Muse, and their US debut, the 10-song PARACHUTES, should appeal to any fans of OK COMPUTER or THE BENDS who found KID A too weird for their tastes. (Coldplay even swipe a song title, "Don't Panic," from Douglas Adams, as Radiohead did with "Paranoid Android.) The soaring yet depressing single "Shiver" is a masterpiece of swelling emotion, and the fact that the other nine tracks, even the instrumental fragment of a title track, sound like variations on its theme is more a matter of conceptual and musical unity than a lack of ideas. This album deserves the hype it got on release.

COLDPLAY WON A MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE THANKS TO THIS ALBUM AND QUITE RIGHTLY SO. THIS ALBUM IS ORIGINALITY AT ITS BEST FROM THE MELODIES TO THE SIMPLE YET RIDDLERESQUE LYRICS.
THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER PRODUCED WITH NO 2 SONGS SOUNDING THE SAME BUT UNQUESTIONABLY SET THE TRADEMARK FOR COLDPLAY AND FRONT MAN CHRIS MARTIN AS ONE OF THE BEST VOCALIST BRITAIN HAS EVER SEEN (YES THE BRITS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!)
AT THE RISK OF SOUNDING LIKE A PRE-MENSTRUAL TEENAGER THIS ALBUM IS FULL OF RAW, HONEST EMOTION THANKS TO MARTINS VOCALS AND YET (FORTUNATELY NOT AT ALL DEPRESSING) THANKS TO THE UPLIFTING, INFLUENTIAL MUSIC.   Magnum Opus from an era-defining act

Coldplay first introduced themselves to the world back in '99 with this amazing debut album. The musical equilibrium is what makes this album so good; Luscious, gentle guitar work complemented by subtle drums and Chris Martin's provocative, earthy vocals are demonstrated in the wonderful opener, 'Don't Panic', a euphoric celebration of life it seems; 'We live in a beautiful world...'

The album progresses swiftly into 'Shiver', their first single. A generally upbeat song epitomized by the shimmering soundscapes projected effortlessly from the guitar. Martin's vocals once again make the song, exuding raw passion in his lyrics especially.

Other highlights of the album include the singles, 'Yellow' and 'Trouble'.

'Yellow' is probably my favourite on the album. The song opens with a crisp acoustic guitar phrase which suddenly evolves into a dense wall of sound. The song blossoms in the chorus with ethereal backing vocals and a backbone rhythm supporting the song's powerful message 'Look at the stars, Look how they shine for you, And everything you do, Yeah they were all yellow.'

'Trouble' is a universally familiar ballad reknowned for its emotion-saturated vocals and epic chorus. A song for reflection, boasting a subtle yet powerful piano line. A touching song which showcases Coldplay's amazing ability to conjure up emotion in anybody.

In retrospect a brilliant album which has influenced countless acts since it was released almost 7 years ago. I doubt Coldplay will ever top this.

A beautiful and sanguine collection from the masters of downbeat rock. Parachutes is one of the must-have albums to absorb yourself into during those sadder moments in life. The emotion just flows and the lyrics are simple, honest and sublimely structured.
