Set in Spain (1944) following the Spanish Civil War in the dark times following Franco's victory this is the story of a young girl called Ofelia ... But it is no ordinary story ... as the movie blends harsh reality with syrreal fantasy as Ofelia is told by a magical creature that she is the lost princess of a once great fairy kingdom !!! This movie is director Del Toro's finest work to date ... gripping, disturbing, shocking, inspiring and magical ! Review ID: 10000000009723062 Was this review helpful? "Pan's Labyrinth" is a fairytale with a rather dark twist. There are some violent scenes in this movie which are certainly not for children to see. The story itself is very good and clever, there's lots of magic and mysterious creatures guarding a labyrinth in the gardens of a Spanish extremeist group. The general is evil and is someone between Henry VIII and Hitler with his extreme opinions and attitude to women. He tortures people who cross him or decieve him in any way, his wife and step-daughter are afraid of him but do as he asks. The young girl discovers that she is actually a princess and her real father is the king of another world, a world which she encounters through magic and adventure. I did enjoy this movie very much although some scenes are quite graphic and disturbing, a modern fairytale though which is well made and directed.
