One of the greatest films ever made...

This is a genuinely emotional tale of a young girl growing up in one of the harshest periods in Spanish history who, depending on your point of view, creates a fantasy world for herself or is in fact the daughter of the King of the Underworld reborn a mortal who must complete 3 tasks to return to her immortal family. I own in the region of 400 Dvds and this ranks #1 among them. It is quite simply astounding, bringing together the emotional intensity of a coming-of-age movie with the true fairy tale elements of the creepiest of the Brothers Grim's tradition.
That the film is in spanish should not put you off, even if you normally find subtitles distracting. My wife is such a person and she loves this film. One caution, however, is that when this film is described as a fairy tale it should not be confused with Peter Pan. There are horrific elements to this story, certainly in the fantastical setting but also including graphic and disturbing images from the 'real-world' setting including a torture scene. If you're looking for something more on the disney line, pay close attention to that 15+ rating; Pan's Labyrinth earns it. However, providing you are not easily upset by such things then this film will make you laugh, cry (in buckets), cheer and get very angry with humanity's darker side.
It is a traditional tale told in a very modern way and is a triumph of film-making that I have no doubt will have a firm place in every serious film-lovers collection. A bit of a marmite movie? Perhaps. But one I'm not ashamed to recommend to anyone who asks: turn out the lights, turn off the phone and give it your full attention.
