Panasonic SD-253 - Excellent bread maker

Making bread with this is really easy. You just chuck the ingredients in, push a couple of buttons and a few hours later you have a really great loaf. And there is virtually nothing to clean up afterwards - you just have to give it a quick wipe and you're ready for the next one.
You can also set the timer, so that it starts at a time appropriate for the loaf to complete when you're home. And you can also make all sorts of dough for other purposes (I like the pizza dough).
Since we got this for Christmas we make all our own bread and it is delicious, despite me being a dreadful cook normally. And it's much healthier as it does not require any preservatives or as much salt as in bought bread.

  Bread to go...

One of the main reason for purchasing a bread maker was because of the lack of quality I can get from my local supermarket. I try my best to purchase from local bakers, but with a busy working life, that is hard.

In addition, I have become a little concerned about my diet. Most bread in the UK is made along the lines of a process called the “Chorley Wood” method; a reliable and system method for the mass production of our daily bread. However, the amount of sugar and salt used is enormous, and in addition, the process must use highly refined “steel roller” milled flour, not the healthier “stone ground” flour (some bread may contain a “quantity” of stone ground flour, but it will not be 100% stone ground, even 100% wholemeal has had any goodness beaten out of it by the highly refined steel rollers, which reduce the actual fibre content down to nothing).

I like my bread, but concerns of taste and quality, I bought the bread maker to increase the amount of wholemeal fibre (using stone ground flour) decrease my salt and sugar intake, and to have 100% fresh bread when I needed it.

The Panasonic bread maker copes well with the extra stresses of stone ground flour, but if you are using this machine with REAL stone ground flour, becarefull with the yeast. I would add a little more yeast than the instructions do suggest, and DO NOT use the delay timer; the yeast "goes off" before the bread begins to bake, and you end up with a collapse! And having to scrap you loaf! Have found that using the "RAPID" mode actualy aids and assists the "breadmaker yeast".

It can be a shock to the system how much fibre is packing in to a real wholemeal loaf! I would actually suggest putting in a mix of stone ground white flour, as high as a 50/50 ratio. My favourite mix is 50% stone ground white, with 50% stone ground multi seeded flour.

The raisin / nuts dispenser works well; but I use this machine really just to make healthy loaves. Do not skimp on the quality of flour, it makes an enormous difference to the taste of the bread.

The Panasonic unit is much better than an earlier machine I owned. It is a “premium” product, but copes well with whatever I have thrown in its little tin! It is VERY easy to use, and I have been totally delighted with it, I highly recommend the unit.

I brought this because the Which magazine recommended it as a best buy. It said it was way in front of others and they were right. It makes the biggest loaf I've seen a breadmaker make. The bread tastes just like those from the supermarket but tastier (without the chewy texture that my old breadmaker had). Really easy to load and clean. Nothing I dislike except all the bread I'm eating because it is so nice.

This is an excellent, reliable, easy-to-use breadmaker. The manual comes with loads of recipes which I have adapted - eg adding walnut oil, honey instead of sugar and milk instead of milk powder and water.

So full marks all round. Does anyone know if the SD 254 and 255 are better?

Great Breadmaker - Get one now!
Review created: 24/06/07

I got this breadmaker for my birthday, eh ehm , 32nd birthday, and being rather an undomesticated goddess wasn't entirely sure that I was ready, however i have fallen in love.
i woke up to the smell of freshly baked bread the next day, my first white loaf looking beautifully crusty and brown. no additives, no preservatives, just nice simple fresh bread.

it took no effort, pile in the ingredients, switch on the timer - little bit of clock maths needed to get it ready for when you wake up next day, ok so not so good on a hangover...

i've made granary, ciabatta, white crusty, white medium, large, xreat large and sandwich. my birthday was 6 days ago. i think im addicted.

get one and stick two fingers up to any supermarket that pumps out fake fresh bread smells and charges a fortune for a handmade loaf with a load of rubbish added to it. nothing beats your own.

even the kids love it. oh yes and it does italian, french, cakes, dough for buns, croisssants comes with a great recipe book.

I am reformed, and hate to say it veering scarely toward domesticated, strangely drawn to cake and loaf tins when shopping but quite simply i dont care. there is a certain smug satisfaction of buying yeast and strong bread flour at the checkout and the knowing of what you can acheive at home with absoluelty NO effort at all.

and best of all, it hardly needs any washing up afterwards!

you will need strong bread flour, quick yeast, milk powder, sugar salt, butter and water for an ordinary loaf. weigh the ingerdients in the removable tin, select the baking time, set the timer - if needed and close the lid and start. its so simple. nicely made and easy to use not the best looking addition to the kitchen, but it is absolutely silent until the finish beep.

enjoy!

The gear is first class, just like new although claimed as used, it came at just the right time as our old one was just about had it and was the only way I could get one as they have now moved to newer models (don't they all). My wife really wanted this model having seen one in action at a friend house, so it pays to look around even )especially) when the model you may want is no longer available from the manufacturer or stockist. I trawled for this, saw three, bid on one (I thought), was outbid and upped my offer, then surprised to see I had won two. Good job I have managed to convince another friend that ti is just what they need too. Both articles turned out to be as new and great value so instinct was right. One of them came next day too, can't beat that.

  The standard?

I bought this on the basis that the brand has quite a following amongst my colleagues at work.

This bread maker consistently makes superb loaves from pre-mixed flour and other ingredients. I find that the basic rapid 2-hour cycle is excellent, and if the loaf is left a little afterward to "keep warm" this hardens the crust a little depending on preference.

Look after the paddle because there will literally be a price to pay if a replacement is needed! If a spare were included then I would rate this excellent.

Have used this every day for two years now. Makes perfect bread and dough for pizzas etc. Saves a fortune on bread and you don't have to eat a teaspoon of salt with every slice. Shop boughtbread now tastes very salty.

Only problem is the dough hook which deteriorates and makes a mess of the middle of the bread as it stays in during cooking. You can buy spares but they are expensive and so we live with the old one.

Panasonic SD-253 Bread Machine - my best buy
Review created: 10/12/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My wife bought it because she did not like the door-stop loaves I used to bake with a Biffinet bread-maker.

The Panasonic makes superb bread - provided that the loaf is removed immediately after baking - if you leave it to keep warm, it continues to cook and the crust goes soft. I do like a crunshy crust on a new loaf.

I follow the Panasonic recipe book and make wholemeal bread with pumpkin or sunflower seeds and use 2 tablespoons of olive oil with 200gms of Morrisons wholemeal flour and 300gms of Lidl's strong bread flour and set a delay of 13 hours to complete at 7:15am next day for breakfast at 8.

Cleaning is easy, I fill the bread pan with luke-warm water to soften the crust around the bread paddle and remove it by hand an hour later.
Used it now for 3 years, the paddle's non-stick finish is wearing thin, but bought another spare via eBay for when it's needed.
Highly recommended, really you can't go wrong - and it is highly rated by the Home and cooking magazines.

I already have one of these & paid full price for it. I bought this one on ebay for a friend. This is the only model of bread maker recommended by Which magazine which is why I bought mine. This was listed as reconditioned & was half shop price which is why I bought it. It arrived well packaged & works perfectly & looks new, an absolute bargain.
I could not live without a breadmaker now. Wonderful fresh bread without any additives. According to recent TV programmes there can be up to 3 teaspoons of salt in a standard processed loaf. Homemade tastes even better & has only one teaspoon of salt per loaf. It takes about 2 minutes to put the ingredients into the breadmaker, then you just leave it for 4 -5 hours depending on which bread your making. Or you can cook it overnight.
There are so many different varieties of bread you can make and can add extra ingredients such as raisins or nuts or cheese & bacon.
If you have never had a breadmaker, do yourself a favour & go & buy one of these, you won't regret it.

  The perfect loaf
Review created: 02/03/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the Panasonic SD-253 because it is the best domestic bread maker on the market. I run a busy B & B and have used the 2 Panasonic SD-253 breadmakers I already own at least once a day, sometimes several times a day for the last 2 years, they make simply superb bread in a normal loaf size. The machine is very reliable and is easy to use, just follow the recipe booklet. In the past two years I have spent a fortune on bread making books and still can't find anything to better the small booklet which accompanies the bread maker.

The smell when they come into the kitchen always gets favourable comments.

  At last - real bread
Review created: 15/08/09

I was very pleased to receive this item, I have wanted one for some time, especially as my old bread maker (a Hinari) only produced canonball type loaves. Two of my daughters own Panasonic Bread machines which always produce very appetising loaves. My first bake was very successful - a multi-seeded loaf. I like the idea of being able to make bread without any preservatives or too much salt - my only worry is that I shall gain weight !

I have one in South Africa and thanks to ebay an identical one here!! I just can't live without my breadmaker thats why I had to source one on ebay. I just worry that I am going to wear both of them out, but I'm sure I'll find more on ebay!!

  Easy Machine, Tasty Bread
Review created: 04/07/09

This machine is great, it makes light, soft bread and it never fails to impress.

It has a seed dispenser which you put seeds in and it will drop them in at the correct time. It is much better than the last bread machine I got .

I had read reviews of Panasonic machines on google and everyone raves about them.
They are the ones to buy.

Mine cost me £21 off Ebay and it is money well spent. It is the slightly older model and has been superseded by the sd254 and more recently the sd255 , however they all by what I have read do the job.

When it comes to breadmakers, Panasonic is the one.

FANTASTIC and very easy to use.
Review created: 21/03/09

I purchased this particular model as I had borrowed my friends and fell in love with the bread.
I checked out the Which reports but this model didn't come in as a "Best Buy", however I decided I would stick to my guns and find this one.

It makes great bread and dough and so easy to use. It has a rapid bake so you can make a loaf in 2 hours. The recipe book is packed with great ideas for different types of bread. It has a timer so you can set it up before you go to bed and wake up to the smell of cooked bread. I am so impressed with it - I couldn't recommend it enough!

Happy cooking.
