  A "Proper" digital camera

This is a digital camera for those of us who started out in 35mm film cameras. Almost uniquely this handles exactly like the majority of SLRs and Rangefinders before the advent of auto everything cameras. So the feel is comfortable, the composition and set up is instinctive for old school photographers so does it deliver?

With a resolution of 5 megapixels give or take it is somewhat behind the state of the art. However it is fitted with a Leica designed lens with a useful range of the equivalent of 28 to 90 on a 35mm camera. This produces absolutely beautiful results that can be digitally printed to A2 size with a completely crisp detail, this is so much better than my 10 megapixel Canon that can barely be printed out at A3 without noticeable fuzziness of detail and some pixelation.

This camera was increadibly expensive and has been superceded by a similar camera with interchangeable lenses. The result is that the DMC-LC1 can be had on ebay at £400 to £500. This makes it an incredible bargain that I couldn't resist!

I an rather a died in the wool film camera person, avoiding all this modern technology as much as possible. However having tried one of these cameras whilst on holiday I was converted - not because it is digital, but it looks and feels right, like a high quality rangefinder camera. It is solid, manufactured by a leading electronics company and has a Leica lens and above all is so easy to use.
Yes it would have been wonderfull to have purchased a new one, but with prices at the time I tried one at over £1000 this was a no goer. The one I have purchased from the eBay auction site looks new - I am still removing the cotton wool it was wrapped in !! And it was under half the price I could be paying if I purchased a new one now. The seller was very helpfull into the bargain so all in allI will enjoy using the camera.

I saw this camera in a photo store when we getting some prints done.
I already have a digi-camera and it works fine and im really pleased with the results but this was a different beast altogether.
First it looks fantastic - in a retro way. Its bigger than the compacts but has a real comfortable handle to it - like it has some substance to it.
And that lens! Leica lens which dominates the front of the camera head on.
I always fancied a Leica camera of some sort but of course all the ones I like are the real good lookers and they come with a hefty price tag. Here i get the looks and the performance lens wise - for anyone buying that is often the case with leica models - you can often get the same camera basically without the red label and a panasonic label instead. I know you may miss out on the cache element but check how this ones looks and tell me which leica looks better. Also the price difference - i did not need a new camera but this one came in at £300 less than in the shop. Used certainly but anyone buying this sort of camera isnt going to abuse it and of course i got the 1 GB card included and a bag etc. so for the sake of missing out on that new product smell and packaging i saved myself enough money to buy a samsung nv7 - anyone selling???
I just like cameras, just like i like watches - i dont need them but i cant help myself.
I was obsessed by this camera and now i have one. all i have to do do now is tell my girlfriend! Great looking camera, great bargain in my mind and I have no doubt the performance will be excellent.
Good hunting.

  DMC LC1 V Sony F828
Review created: 30/05/08(updated 30/05/08)

Camera to a advance photographer is so so, function is not easy to use but the lens is excellent, I had used a Sony F828 for some time the quality of the picture almost up for par with the Sony but the Sony have the better usage of zoom range and higher resoultion, for beginner it is a great camera nad the price is much cheaper than the Sony.
