At first I ordered a Samsung NV3 from Amazon.co.uk, but the item they sent was not new and did not function properly. I sent it back and bought this which I am very happy with. I was mostly interested in a camera that could also do video at a DVD or above resolutions. The DMC-FX12 captures .mov video files (not quite as versatile as .avi files) at at maximum of 848 x 480 at 30 frames per second. I think this is great. Very good quality video for a camera.

The range of functions for capturing still images is also great. I like the ability to set white balance, to zoom-in and crop images in playback mode, and I really like the general appearance and feel of the camera when using it.

The acquisition software can be a bit frustrating, and although I was led to belive it had a USB 2.0 interface, the transfer of pics and videos does not seem to happen very fast.

The other small disappointment for me was that the AV outputs only send proper PAL or NTSC format signals when in playback mode. This is fine for looking at Pictures or Video on a TV screen that have already been captures, but it does not extend to a real-time display of the menus or real-time signals from the camera lens. This isn't really a necessity for most people, but I would have had fun doing that.

Overall this is very good camera which takes good pics and is useable by anybody, with any amount of photographic skills/knowledge. Ideally I would also have liked the inclusion of an mp3 player/ media player like the samsung NV3, but even so, I am glad I got a Panasonic DMC-FX12 instead.

  My New Digital Camera

I was delighted when I received my new Lumix DMC-FX12 Digital Camera for only £142
including postage and a 2GB SD Card. The same camera is on sale for £199 at a leading high street discount shop - without the 2GB SD Card.
The results of the photographs that I have taken have been absolutely stunning!
and considering the saving of £82 including the SD Card, have made this an outstanding purchase!

I bought my panasonic fx-12 on ebay for £142 inc 2gb card, case, spare battery, and cleaning kit.It came from hong kong, ordered on Monday afternoon and in my hands on Thursday morning!!! The pictures are simply stunning with a macro option for close ups which produce better pictures than my trusted 35mm canon f1. Its size is perfect for carrying in your pocket, and the rechargeable battery is good for about 300 shots. If your in the market for a compact ,prety camera that takes professional quality photos then look no further!!!!

Small, compact and has many usable functions.
I first took this camera on holiday with me and found it to be quite versatile. It took a while to understand all the features but the 'simple' and 'intelligent iso' functions worked pretty well.
I have only printed off a few pictures from this camera and the quality is very good on the 8"x 6" print. I have yet to try anything larger.
My FX-12 came with a 2Gb card which was very useful indeed. My one gripe was that it did not come with a case. After much searching, I found a Panasonic case that fitted. If you are taking this camera anywhere you will definitely need a case.

I needed a very compact good quality digital camera for a birthday present for my son to take when cycling. He is a keen camera user and has a high spec digital camera already which is too bulky for cycling. He is very pleased with it and says it is just the right format and excellent value with very good optical and other features. I found it very good value from e-bay compared with high street shops, and I was impressed with the general design and styling.

This is MY opinion about Lumix FX12, not a comparison!
Review created: 03/01/08

This is my opinion about this camera, not a comparison about cameras!

Size:
It fits a shirt pocket nicely, but to put in your jeans, you would have to consider buying a screen protector, just not to have the display scratched!

Display:
Good size! (Any bigger and the size of the camera would be compromised) Disadvantage is that you can't flip it like you do in a Canon - sorry for comparing - but you don't miss it often, once you can change the brightness of the display to shoot at high angles like over a crowd of select "self-portraid" and the camera will try to center your face automatically.

Battery:
Lasts more than a long day of pictures. It mentions up to 320 pictures! I doubt it. But it certainly takes more than 100 good quality pictures using the flash.

Handling:
it is certainly user-friendly! Inteligent ISO is the best thing you can use if you are lazy about reading manuals. But, if you want to add a little more quality to your pictures, you should spend some time reading it (the manual). There are some great features to use.

Photo quality:
I like it very much! Looks good on the computer! Never printed a photo to say how it looks on paper.

Filming:
Well, it gets the job done.

Overview:
I like the camera! It is good for beginners! Good cost-benefit! But, to do all you can do with it, I recomend reading the manuals !

I hope I have helped.

The service was excellent from the seller & I wouldnt hesitate to use them again. I now have beautiful pictures of Australia & my grandson which I will treasure forever

Great Overall Camera for your hols or everyday use

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12 is a great overall camera. You have the obvious built quality of the Lumix range and its easy to use. It takes SD cards so you can easily pop open the bottom hatch and take out the SD card to put in your laptop/card reader or digital photo frame. I find a 2GB more than enough. The rechargeable battery is brilliant - i wouldnt go back to any camera that takes AA batteries again!! The screen is large and clear - there is no view finder so everything is done via the screen. It has optical and digital zoom although if you use the digital zoom it normally comes out blurry so stick to the optical unless you are using it on a small tripod to steady it. I would recomend this model to anyone after a good normal camera.

This Is the first Digital compact I have owned & Its got everything you could possibly want on a compact camera. The screen Is big enough (2.5inch), the buttons are all together & not too small that you keep pressing other buttons accidently & the menus are easy to navigate. Its fast & even If you arent the steadiest with your hands Its got an Image stabiliser to compensate handshake, not to mention that Its also got a Leica lens. Its just an all round great camera.. Top marks to Panasonic on this.... 10/10.

My son gets married in the USA next summer and I have been looking for a camera to hide about my person yet produce acceptable results, it looks at first glance that I have solved both problems?

The Lumix is smaller than expected which adds to its spec and fills a gap I thought may be an issue, the Leica lens should produce exceptional quality for the size of the camera and the finish is very professional. Being a Nikon user, both of my bodies being of the extremely heavy variety, I think this little beauty is in for alot of use.

This is a great camera with many features that you would only expect to find on a larger digital SLR. The LCD screen has both a high angle mode and a brightness boost for tricky positions, and the image stabilizer mode reduces shake found when using small hand held cameras. The casing is made from metal and internally it is fitted with a shock absorbing system to protect it if dropped. Picture quality and battery life are both excellent. Although it has no manual mode there are enough scene mode choices for every scenario. This is my second FX12 the first having had the LCD screen broken (being so large a percentage of the cameras backplate you really need to protect it well when carrying it).

The best compact camera in taht price range on the market.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12 features the high quality Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens which ensures that a camera of this size can give excellent performance. With 3x optical zoom and made up of 7 elements in 6 groups including 3 lenses with 3 aspherical surfaces, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12 delivers exceptional optical results. There is a 4x digital zoom which when combined with the optical zoom gives 12x and 18x when combined with the Extra Optical Zoom

  GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY CAMERA

The camera is very compact and neat. I was looking for a panisonic lumux anyway due to the great battery packs that they come with but this one sold it to me due to the large 2GB memory stick it came with, along with the mini tripod.
My only dislike is that it is 3X optical zoom, which was clearly stated in the description but i didn't realise how limited that made the zoom in range. Next time i will definitely go for a 10X or more zoom.

Excelent camera at a great price.

Not knowing all that much about cameras I decided to get this for my girlfriend as a present. I got the camera (refurb) for €160 with a 2gb which is an extremely reasonable price for any camera nearly!

When i got the camera the first thing that struck me was its size, very neat and tidy. Its a small camera with a big screen. Very nice looking exterior. It has a matt black finish on it.

Picture quality from this camera is superb, It seems to take great pictures no matter what sort of an environment you are in. Its image stabilization is amazing, by far the most impressive I've ever seen! I could literally shake my hand as hard as i could while taking a picture and it would still come out perfect... no more blurry motion shots! The quality of videos is great for a little digital camera, was very suprised.

The camera comes jammed packed with modes and features which i haven't got around to using all myself. All and all i would recomend this camera to anyone!

Short but sweet. Carried out lots of research on digital cameras, having never owned one before. I was from the old sdchool of 35mm SLR. After seeing the quality of prints from digital format I thought it was time to make the move. As I said after lots of research reading reviews like this I choose the above camera. Had this for about 5 months now with absolutly no regets brilleant camera, easy to use. I have bought a second one for a christmas present for my daughter.

I've always wanted to own a Leica camera, but could never afford one....so this camera is really ideal for me as it has a Leica lens. Is this a worthwhile feature? Trust me on this, it's very important. I'm never going to print photos bigger than A4 size, but even at this size you can tell the quality of the lens. It's much more important than the amount of pixels - although this Lumix has more pixels than you can shake a stick at.
A beautifully designed camera which points and shoots if that's what you want. Or you can program it and use various settings to produce results that are to your own choosing. I'm very impressed by the results of this camera. I recently watched an edition of The Gadget Show and if you spend a great deal of money, you can get a HD video camera that produces marvellous video. Well, don't tell anyone, but the quality of the video of this camera has to be seen to be believed- it will even produce video in 16*9 format and I won't exagerate just how marvellous this is. I bought a refurbished model; it was 16 months after its original launch so the price was reasonable. Actually, I use my camera a lot, so it was a bargain.

  Compact Camera
Review created: 02/02/08
by:

I brought this camera for one reason only, and that was I wanted a compact camera I could carry around with me at all times, and one that was small enough to just put in my pocket. I all ready had a compact camera witch was very good but it is bigger than this one and did not fit in my pocket , so I would have to carry it or have a bag that went on my belt but it was still bulk. I also have a SLR with the same problem. This camera just slips in to the pocket of your trousers or shirt so I tend to have it with me more now, but I must say I was surprised with the quality of the pictures and the ease of use of the camera. The night shots I have taken have been very good, especially with the image stabilise I usually only get good shots at night with my SLR. Over all I am very happy with the camera I brought it for its compact size I am more than happy with the quality of the pictures I have taken with it and the ease of use to take them with built in programs, and I tend to have a camera with me more now
