A beautifully crafted gem.

This film will not appeal to every viewer, but I found it to be a moving, and captivating tale which deals eloquently with the central themes of love, anger, revenge and betrayal. Shot mostly on location in Guilin in southern China and based on the Somerset Maugham novel, this is a slow-moving piece that doesn't rely on large budget action sequences to be both engrossing and touching.
Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive, The Ring) plays the spoiled Kitty, who marries Walter Fain (played by Edward Norton, Fight Club, The Illusionist) in a bid to gain independence from her stifling existence as a young unmarried woman. Kitty does not love the shy and ultrapolite young bacteriologist and soon bored by her marriage, begins an affair with Townsend, a married British diplomat (played by Liev Shreiber). When Townsend, to Kitty's surprise but not Walter's, refuses to leave his wife, she is forced to join Walter on a mission into the cholera-ridden areas of China in an attempt to help the diseased ravaged peasants and avoid scandal.
The Painted Veil is skillfully acted - Edward Norton and Naomi Watts give stunning performances and bring real warmth and chemistry to the charaters they portray. An excellent supporting cast including Diana Rigg as a nun, and Toby Jones as Waddington, adds depth and dimension to the film.
Director John Curran combines stunning cinematography, period detail, tension, drama and emotion. Gripping.
The dvd also provides an engrossing insight into the making of the film in a behind the scenes documentary.
