Michael Stipe's thinking person's lyrics are almost buried by the band's Byrdslike arrangements of the notable 'Radio Song' and 'Shiny Happy People'. There are those that have criticized R.E.M. for stepping out of a parochial indie scene, but their impact in the 90s was as welcome as the Sex Pistols were in the 70s. Their catalogue is destined to endure as critics reluctantly accept their considerable importance in the history of rock. They will continue to make albums as good as this. I consider them to be one of the best bands ever. Michael Stipe; Vocal Master and Lyrical Genius. Time and time again he combines his incredible talents to great effect. Having said that, this is not my favourite REM CD. Not my favourite by a long chalk but most definitely a good'un. A bloody good'un at that. This CD boasts two of REM's best tracks ever; 'Losing My Religion' and 'Shiny Happy People'. As great songs go, these are two of the best and either one is well worth the cover price alone. 'Endgame' is a lovely piece of music in which Michael Stipe uses his voice as a musical instrument instead of singing. His unique voice harmonises beautifully with the guitar and horn section. Great Sound. Very effective. There is not a single bad track on this CD. As I said earlier, two are 'out of this world', another eight are absolutely brilliant and the last one 'Radio Song' is merely "really rather good". Overall this is a brilliant CD deserving of a place in anybody's collection. I find it frustrating however that Warner chose not to include the lyrics with this CD opting instead for an ultimately useless - but attractive nonetheless - 12 page foldout with some interesting artwork and cover notes. If you've read my other reviews you will know how much I love lyrics so I really hate it when a record company lessens my musical enjoyment by depriving me of my lyric fix. I certainly don't regret having bought this CD all those years ago and I am sure you won't regret picking one up cheap off eBay today. (It could be yours for less than a fiver inc. P&P) Enjoy!
