A film that sparks conversation
Yes, it may owe a litle to Henry James' story 'The Turn of The Screw', but it is inpirational. Nicole Kidman's performance is masterly, and the gentle acting of the mysterious servants plays playful havoc with the audience's judgement - deliberately so.
There is no gore for gore's sake and the climax is reached with skill and artistry. A film that I watched with my whole family, set off a spontaneous discussion, where we shared the sadness and tragedy..and, importantly, we all wanted to watch it again, almost wishing to alter the inevitable.
It is a work of art, above the common failings of the genre.
It has sensitivity, gentleness and is finely crafted throughout, leaving an ache of longing to know if the soldier father found rest from his obvious torment. Highly recommended for a memorable experience.
