Music for the Lord of Ten Thousand Years...
Review created: 03/07/06(updated 02/01/07)
This album includes a range of music almost as diverse as Chinese culture itself.
The first 9 pieces are by Sakamoto, blending ethereal traditional melodies and instruments with a more usual 'big film' orchestral score, to powerful overall effect.
The 4 pieces by ex-Talking Head David Byrne have a very different flavour (though still making excellent use of Chinese tunes), achieving a more idiosyncratic style, but no less accomplished or moving.
The final few pieces on the album are a miscellany of other music from the film.
All in all, this is a very richly-textured and beautiful album, quite enjoyable in its own right, not just as a "soundtrack".
