Album Notes Personnel includes: Mike Oldfield, Paddy Moloney. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Ommadawn represents a creative peak for Oldfield that is often overshadowed by the huge commercial success of his debut Tubular Bells. Oldfield employed the same format he had used on his previous two albums, with both sides of the album comprising a lengthy instrumental collage. This time he drew on a greater range of musical styles, using recurring motifs that had recognizable African, Eastern European and Irish sources (Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains being responsible for the latter). The album was also notable for the way Oldfield collaborated with the other musicians, drawing attention away from his image as the self-styled studio recluse. A much more musically mature composition than either of Mike Oldfield's previous hits, (Tubular Bells / Hergest Ridge), and far better musically than anything subsequent except perhaps the Re-Mastered Tubular bells TB30, Ommadawn is a master-work, filled with strong and beautiful Gaelic inspired themes that stay with you. Dynamically it builds from the gentlest of themes, becoming a wall of sound at some points and develops into Oldfields most complete work. A mixture of Gaelic inspired chants and primeval African rhythms that hold the interest throughout, but never become tedious or monotonous. This is a serious listening album - (there's so much in there to discover)- but it's also mild enough for use as a low level musical backdrop whilst studying; this SACD holds a very good recording of it too. I WAS HEAVILY INTO HIS LPS IN THE 70S AFTER TUBULAR BELLS, LIVING IN A WOOD WITH LARGE SPEAKERS AND NO NEIGHBOURS TO COMPLAIN, I USED TO SIT WITH MY DOORS OPEN, IN AUTUMN LISTENING TO OMMADAWN AND THE SOUND OF THE ROOKS ON THE ROOKERY NEARBY, JUST LISTENING TO THIS AGAIN I WAS IMMEDIATELY BACK 30 YEARS AGO WHEN THIS WORLD WAS A BETTER PLACE, NO KIDS, MORTGAGE, WORRIES OR GREY HAIR! I CANT WAIT FOR HIS NEW ONE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES WITH KARL JENKINS, ANOTHER OF MY FAVOURITE COMPOSERS, THESE TWO TOGETHER WILL MAKE FOR SOME WONDERFUL LISTENING, IF I COULD JUST GO BACK TO MY COTTAGE IN THE WOOD!
