Olympus DS-40 (512 MB) Handheld Digital Voice Recorder

I have used this model of digital recorder throughout my university years and it has been fantastic. Easy to understand, Small and compact and the sounds is clear to hear even in large lecture halls.

very good piece of kit. The sensitivity adjustment allows capture of audio in alomost any environment, easy to load to audio to PC, and to e-mail if necessary. Audio filers can be reviewed via headphones or in built speaker.

The stero Microphone can be removed and leaves a mono mic which is inbuilt and records with good quality itself, alternatively you can plug in a high gain external mic, even works for covert capture.
Solid construction, metal body feels solid and heavy, small and compact.

Have not uysed the Podcast feature so can't comment, but this does what ist says on the box, pricey, but capable.

Ticks all the boxes for me.

as my wife needed small compact Digital Voice Recorder the olympus ds-40 looked just a job on receiving it and trying it out just perfect did everything we wanted plus extras, stores music link to pc plus good price well pleased

Superb little piece of kit. Absolute godsend when my mind drifts off in lectures! Very compact and easy to use. Highly recommend this voice recorder.

Compact, well designed and built and with good software to download to PC. Only gripe is that it continues to have miniscule memory - fine for audio dictation but not for music - but then it's the former it was designed for.

The item I bought is useful for my studies: I can broadcast any lecture I want and listen to it later, when I need to remember certain aspects. The Item I have bought is good quality, and looks like new. It was described exactly and fast delivered.

As usual I spent a long time reading reviews before I decided on this model.
The advantages appeared to be
1) Big enough memory for at least 30 hours recording - Olympus will record up to 170 hours on lowest quality setting
2) Good battery life - no problems so far 2xAAA have lasted ages and still show full power
3) Quality of the machine - the olympus is quite lightweight but it is very robust.

Very pleased with this model it does everything very well
Only disadvantage I can think of is that the software is over complicated and the files sizes are very big (WMA) - 20 minutes recording will be about 6MB although this is on high quality setting

The other model I considered was the Sony ICD UX70. I liked the fact that no software is needed and the recorder plugs straight into a USB socket - MP3 straight to PC

Excellent piece of kit- clearest dictaphone i've come across- professional and well worth the cash.
My only criticism would be that it records in wma and not mp3 but you can download the necessary software everywhere on the net

The product reflects it's price and is excellent. It is convienent to use, small enough to keep in the pocket. The size of the memory is large enaough for daily use. There are a lot of additional functions. It has sensitive microphone.

I decide to buy the Olypmus DS-40 Digital Voice Recorder because im study in the university and i used to recorder the important lectures. Very good product and easy to used.

I have over the years had quite a few Voice recorders from cassette to mini cassette to the new digital recorders, from the digital range I have had 3 different kinds, 1 unbranded with 2gb on board, this for voice was adequate but lacking in real sound quality. The second was a Panasonic Digital voice recorder with a zoom mic. It was a quality sound recorder, but rubbish as you could not get the sound of to a computer. Then I bought the Olympus DS-40 Digital Voice Recorder and I have not looked back. It has that real quality of Sound both in voice and music , simple to use and connect to a PC for editing. I would recommend this to anyone. It has some clever features like if your in a meeting and there’s a constant buss or hum from a fan or OHP, the DS-40 hears the noise and moves the threshold one step up to eliminate the noise on the recording. If your looking for a digital recorder then get one of these

I purchased this to record university lectures, I am a distant leaning student and only have occasional days at university, on these days I will have wall to wall lectures. My DS-40 has enabled me to record the lectures and make notes later as opposed to rushing them as I go. The sound quality surpasses all my expectations. My only criticism is that the enclosed software could have more functionality, but this is more of a wish than a need.

I found a need for a recorder for lectures on a six-month Diploma course. Buying new seemed excesive, but eBay had pages of appropriate equipment to choose from. This Olympus model has proven to be a wise choice - its software is so easy you barely need the instructions (just as well, as they are mostly on pdf, not paper) and the build quality is top-notch. Better yet, Olympus' desktop application is also reliable and fully cross-platform, so it's an excellent partner for my Mac. The recordings are astonishin clear and precise - my last experience of dictaphones was with tape models 10 yr ago; the digital revolution in this marketplace is complete. I expected to sell this again at the end of the course, but with a range of microphones, compact size, excellent build and ease of use it looks like a keeper.
