Oliver Twist (DVD 2005)

Oliver Twist has been adapted for television so many times over the years and I have to say this is a good but not the greatest adaptation. Probably the best version is the 1968 musical version which seems to played practically every year in the run up to Christmas day. I think this Disney version despite a star studded cast didn't quite live up to my expectations.

I felt the way in which Oliver was portrayed wasn't quite the way Dickens originally represented him as he seemed to be much more bold and brazen in this version and he would probably have made a better Artful Dodger as Elijah Wood doesn't seem quite the best fit for the role. He didn't have that 'street-smart' Dodger feel that so many other actors have had.

It seems as though Disney have tried to smooth out all the rough edges of the plot but at the expense of many of the more classical encounters and characters that made 'Oliver Twist' what it was. It just doesn't do the story justice in my opinion even though I did repeatedly watch the DVD. Still I think other versions like the musical version do more in the way of paying the novel it's dues.

Typical Hollywood, nothing like the real story, although Richard Dreyfuss was excellent but underused, Elijah Wood miscast...a disappointing film,

i like it as it did happen to children days gone by and it was most enjoyable for any age and i watch them over and over again you dont no it might just let children of today be more thankful than taking things for granted as lots of big families struggle them selves at the moment pat

i would like to collect all of the walt disney films for my children, this film i didn't actually know existed, but it was a bril film and when my children grow up a little i am sure they will enjoy it as much as i did.

my son has wanted this film for a long time. very happy with the service,would use this fellow e bayer again, very good.

Bought it by mistake. NO SINGING IN THIS ONE. Wasn't too impressed with it! Oliver!s not the same without jack wild!!!

I BROUGHT THIS ITEM AS THE CHILDREN HAVE SEEN IT ON TV A COUPLE OF TIMES MY SON KEPT ASKIN FOR IT, I WENT STRAIGHT ON2 EBAY AND BID ON IT THEN WON IT, MY YOUNGEST WAS SO PLZED, THEY LOVE WATCHIN IT AND HAVE WATCHED IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN, I HAD DIFFICULTY TRYIN TOO FIND IT IN THE SHOPS.
