  Oliver DVD
Review created: 02/06/08

My children grew up with Charles Dickens and looked forward to Christmas when the television would put on Scrooge, Oliver Twist, and other Dickens books brought to life by television.
That was 35 years ago.Now they have grown up and have children of their own who having watched the musical on TV themselves and saw the "Nancy" competition, they to love Oliver. I have now bought the video, they can fill themselves up with all the songs and dancing routines to their hearts content.
Oliver, the Artful Doger,Fagin, Bill Sykes and Nancy are their most loved charecters. The street scenes where the Butchers , Bakers, etc. do their dance routines and the street vendors dancing and singing, selling their wares are wonderful. Their favourite amongst all is Fagin, singing his " gotta pick a pocket or two" and all three of my grandchildren can take him off to a T when they crook their legs in a semi-crouch position and go through the whole dance routine. This video is well worth buying for its capacity to entertain all ages. The music will be buzzing around inside your head for weeks after you view it. A classic.

One of the Best Musicals of All Time
Review created: 27/04/08

Simply put, Oliver! is one of the greatest musicals of all time. It is filled with memorable songs - "Food Glorious Food", "Oliver!", "Consider Yourself" and "Oom-Pah-Pah" to name just a few - and equally memorable characters.

The film is a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel and much like the story of Oliver Twist itself, it is a perfect family film. There are some frightening moments - the villain Bill Sykes played by Oliver Reed is scary enough on his own - but overall, the film will appeal to children of all ages as well as adults.

The story - which almost everyone is surely familiar with by now - revolves around a little orphan boy named Oliver and his life growing up in London. At first he lives in the workhouse with the rest of his fellow orphans but after daring to question Mr. Bumble, the overseer, he is sold to a family as a servant.

After a series of mishaps and close shaves, he meets the Artful Dodger - superbly played by a young Jack Wild, who gives his all in the role - and through him, the greedy Fagin (Ron Moody), who trains young boys to pick pocket treasures which he keeps for himself.

The film was shot solely in studios and on soundstages at Shepperton Film Studios but this does not translate at all to film. The sets perfectly replicate Victorian London, as do the costumes worn by the characters. A multi-Oscar winner and a massive success on its release, Oliver! is a worthy contender for the best musical all of time and will delight anyone who loves film.

Great family musical. Loads of memoriable tunes. Brings back many childhood memories of watching it at Christmas on TV before the days of Videos and DVDs. All family seem to enjoy it as we have two children under 11 who have all the other dvds and digital at their finger tips. Worthy of a DVD collection could watch over and over again although not to sure the children will!

  My All Time Favourite Film
Review created: 30/01/08
by:

Oliver is my all time favourite film, and probably the one I've watched more times than any other. I almost wore out my VHS copy and ordered the DVD version three weeks before I got my DVD player.

For those of you who haven't seen it, the film is based on Charles Dickens' famous novel 'Oliver Twist'. Having read the book I can say that certain liberties have been taken in shortening/changing the plot, but this in no way spoils the film. I tend to think of the book and film as two different stories. If the whole book had been used, the film would have run for hours and hours. It's quite a long film anyway. Basically it's the story of an orphan from the workhouse finding out who his mother really was and being reunited with his family. Along the way he meets Fagin (a likeable villain), the Artful Dodger, Nancy, the truly nasty Bill Sykes and their gang of thieves. Helped along by some fantastic songs (Food Glorious Food, Where is Love, Consider Yourself, Pick a Pocket or Two, I'd Do Anything, As Long as He Needs Me, Reviewing the Situation and several more) the film comes to a climax with the rousing 'Oom Pah Pah' which leads to a two violent deaths (I'm not saying whose - in case you haven't seen the film)and Oliver being reunited with the kindly Mr Brownlow.

One of the last truly great musicals, this is an entertaining film for all of the family, and I'm sure like me you'll want to watch it again, and again and again.... (actually I've almost convinced myself to go and watch it again now).

I'd give it 6 out of 5 if I could - it really is that good. And the best news is, you should be able to pick up a fairly cheap copy on E-Bay!

i bought this dvd because my youngest son (age 13) is playing 'Oliver' in the school musical its for 50 year celebration at school where the Drama and the Music departments have combined.
I thought it would help him with his part. The classic film is very much a classic all my children gather round every time we put it on (and to study the part, even his walk! its been on quite a few times!!) Famous actors and characters alike, a brilliant family movie as i well remember my self
