Ocean's Thirteen (DVD)

Description
The third installment of Steven Soderbergh's slick, star-studded heist series just might be the best, as Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and company pull off another elaborate caper, this time in the name of revenge. Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), one of Ocean's original eleven, lies nearly comatose after a myocardial infarction brought on by shock. His dreams of regaining his former glory on the Vegas strip have been dashed by the dastardly Willie Bank (Al Pacino), with whom Reuben foolishly went into business to build the biggest and flashiest casino the the world has ever seen. Bank took Reuben for all he was worth, and now, the famously loyal thirteen won't rest until Bank has been brought down. They execute this noble cause through complex, daring, and brilliant machinations that make the most of everyone's talents, including Yen's (Shaobo Qin) acrobatics, Linus's (Matt Damon) acting abilities, and Basher's (Don Cheadle) heavy machinery. Virgil and Turk Malloy (Casey Affleck and Scott Caan) get a few hilarious moments as they brew up a revolution in a Mexican plastics plant, while Rusty (Brad Pitt) and Danny coolly preside over the action like omniscient, infallible deities, always about three steps ahead of the game. The villain's downfall is utterly satisfying due to the pure capitalist evil channelled by Pacino, while Ellen Barkin vamps it up as Bank's "cougar" of an assistant. The camaraderie of the thirteen lends heart to these cool criminals, best captured by the sappy letters Basher sends Reuben, which ultimately bring him back to life. Vegas is effectively captured through seamless editing and beautiful photography, with the trappings of uber-wealth making the fantasy even more fantastical.

Editorial Reviews
The cons and gambits come at you thick and fast, and Clooney and his compatriots guide them all with such insular verbal code that the movie is beyond sly -- it's a blizzard of blissed-out chicanery
Entertainment Weekly

The third time really is a charm....OCEAN'S THIRTEEN is also a gas; it's lighter than air, prettier than life, a romp, a goof and an attentively oiled machine
New York Times

OCEAN'S THIRTEEN is as frothy and smooth as a chilled margarita on a hot Vegas night....It's breezy, clever fun and ridiculously easy on the eyes

The ties are off and the collars are out for this breezy third entry in the slick crime caper serial in which the ever-smug Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his misfit band of thieves are starting to feel the pinch of old age. When bespectacled oldster Reuben (Elliot Gould) has a heart attack after being duped out of some lucrative Vegas real estate by hotel developer Willy Banks (an unusually demure Al Pacino), Danny and the boys are drafted in to bust him down a few pegs.

There’s a sense that the filmmakers have taken note of criticisms aimed at the sub-par ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ (love interests and pop cultural references are a no-show), though in doing so they seem inadvertently to have remade ‘Ocean’s Eleven’. Thematically, though, this is an improvement on its forebears, mainly due to the way it deals – much like Scorsese’s best work – with the archaic nature of the criminal set: gadget men puzzled by advancing technology; eyes rolled at witty one-liners; action sequences cut through with ruminations on ‘the good old days’.

Even Soderbergh’s once-agile camera seems a little more sedate than usual, perhaps finding the industrious director in a more plaintive mood after a string of coolly-received projects. But whether the ‘Ocean’s…’ franchise is really going to fold will surely be for the box office – and not that big craps table in the sky – to decide.

Ocean's 13 is really good, as are the other films in the series.
I was expecting to see a normal heist (probably in a casino) with some style, but I got more.
Ocean's 11 was straightforward substance, with a great twist at the end, and Ocean's 12 was similar.
But Ocean's 13 is different, yet is still a good follow-up and a very entertaining film.
Al Pacino plays the villain, and Matt Damon, George Clooney and Brad Pitt all return
to pull off an impossible heist.
The script is sleek, and sometimes adds the needed humour in the film in the right places.
It's perfect for evening entertainment, because you can see what it's like in the life of
people that are smarter, funnier, and way cooler than you.

  Ocean's Thirteen the Movie

I loved the Original tongue in cheek Ocean's Eleven which starred the notorious rat-pack but couldn't get to like any of the three new Ocean's films. The plots were absurd in all three. Ocean's Thirteen is the latest and again the whole idea or plot was absolutely ridiculous. I like my films of heists to be at least plausible. However I did like the soundtrack and have recently purchased it from e.bay. So overall I'm glad I watched the film because it led me to some great music.

Without doubt the best of the trilogy. I was recently given an iPod Touch for my birthday. I intend to put on some of my favourite films and this is one of them.
