Putting their own unique spin on Homer's classic Odyssey, O Brother, Where Art Thou is another Coen brothers classic.
In a Golden Globe winning performance, George Clooney plays Ulysses Everett McGill, a silver-tongued petty criminal who finds himself on a chain gang in deepest Mississippi. Together with a clumsy duo of lame losers, simple minded Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) and maladjusted Pete (John Turturro), he scams his way off the chain gang and into the adventure of a lifetime as the three set off in search of a fortune in buried treasure... still shackled and hopelessly unprepared for the road ahead.
Featuring a supporting cast of larger than life characters including John Goodman as Big Dan Teague, Holly Hunter as Everett's old flame Penny and Charles Durning as Governor Pappy O'Daniel, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is an irresistible mixture of high adventure, sidesplitting comedy and heartfelt emotion.
A fantastic film that deals with big issues through comedy and a kind of magic realism; beautiful cinematography, music, acting, casting, in fact I can't think of a bad word to say about it. I like all the Coen Brothers' films, but this is the best. Everyone should see it. Liz
It's an ok film really, with good characters, just not the sort of comedy that I most enjoy. It's easy enough to watch though and inoffensive. George Clooney is a good actor too and easy on the eye, so that always help!!! bx
This excellent film came to my attention late... but not too late - what a Cracker! The soundtrack ( get this on CD too )was actually made BEFORE the film with many famous artisites apppearing - there was even a Concert of the songs! Humour by the bucketload, great character acting and some ace, Foot Stompin' Toons put this in my All Time Top Ten Films...and I've seen a few!!! Get the Special Edition 2-Disc Version as you get a Full Version of the Classic " Man of Constant Sorrow", the top song in the film - that also won Grammy Awards. Put this one on your *Feel Good Movie List*
this film is just one of those films you either love or hate. I found it to be very entertaining and not being a george clooney i found him to be excellent at playing the part of everett and in my opinion this is probably one of the best films he has made a good all round film
One of the Coen brothers' more easy-going films, brilliantly soundtracked (under the helm of T-Bone Burnett) by names such as Emmy-Lou Harris, Chris Thomas King & Alison Kraus. Clooney is perfect as the self-important Ulysses Everett McGill, proving his aptitude for comedy, and his two on-the-run buddies (John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson) provide excellent comic support. The film, despite its comedic nature, provides a wonderfully atmospheric view of depression-era deep-south USA - altogether a superb movie & definitely one of my favourites.
This film is my husband's favourite and he absolutely loves it!! The music is fantastic and George Clooney fabulous! Defenitely a most for our and all family households
great film and highly recommended! good cast, and the soundtrack is amazing!! good acting from george clooney et al. man of constant sorrow is just ace!
Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney, The Perfect Storm) busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his two chain-mates from the chain gang -- bad-tempered Pete (John Turturro, Summer of Sam) and sweet, dimwitted Delmar ( Tim Blake Nelson, Hamlet). With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain -- before it's lost forever in a flood -- the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman, Cyote Ugly), it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.
This DVD was a brilliant reminder to me that I have received God's Grace. I thought that there was way too much Blasphemy in this DVD; however, God will still use these sorts of things for His Glory.
I decided to buy this DVD becuase it reminded me of a really strange but real time in my life when God touched my life.
At the time, I could have went either way, but I believe God was asking me where my head was at and that He had already poured out His Grace and Favour on me; so it was time to follow God's will and not mine.
I decided to look to buy this dvd as my partner has the soundtrack to it on cd and loves every line. I thought it would be a nice gift for him then he can put the tunes to various parts of the cd. Also it shows that l have gone out of my way to find something special for him
