Nokia N95 - The day i got mine.

Likes - Slim, ease of use, good screen size, lightweight
Dislikes - Crashed once so far, and ... not found another one yet!

Like most people, i waited and waited eagerly for the new Nokia N95. Then on Tuesday morning i received mine. I ripped of the packaging and there it was. A brand new, the eagerly awaited Nokia N95.
Opening the box, the phone sits in a plastic case (nice touch) in all it's glory. Out with the phone, in with the battery and sim card and plugged it in with the neat little Nokia charger.
Flicking briefly thru the many manuals you receive with the phone, you can just tell this phone is going to give you hours upon hours of fun and enjoyment, as well as phone calls of course.
Ok, battery fully charged, time to switch on. As with most Nokia's your greeted with the joining of hands, however this time the clarity is amazing on its larger screen.
Opening the effertless two way slider downwards, gives you the numeric keypad like previous slide phones, however, sliding it upwards opens the gallery and presents you with play, pause, forward and rewind buttons, nice neat touch that.
Time to go and investigate what is on the phone. Well, the first item i wanted to try was the Sat Nav. One the screen you are presented with a map of the world as the phone tries to work out where you are. It takes on average a minute to find at least 3 sattelites to pin point your position. The world then moved slighty and then started to zoom in. Europe, United Kingdom, Scotland, Edinburgh, then within seconds it was at street level showing me exactly where i am. And i mean exactly, it even told me my house number!
What i would advise you to do is invest in a decent Micro SD card, so you can download maps on to it, as the way i have just described, you are actually downloading a massive amount of data, therefore costing lots of pennies.
What now i thought to myself, as i wandered thru the rest of the menus, you just know that this is a good phone, there is no pausing switching between menus, the keypad is precise, and the screen lets you read everything with the clarity you would expect on a TFT monitor!
Turning the phone round you see the cover for the camera, now it's time for some serious fun, opening the slider presents you with a 5 million pixel camera. As with my previous phone, the N80, you use the phone in landscape mode just like a proper camera. Moving round my living room, the screen was managing to keep up with every move i made, auto focusing when neccessary. Unfortunately, there is no optical zoom, just 20x digital zoom, so there is a slight loss in quality the further you zoom. With the pressing of a couple of buttons your into video mode. Once again it was able to keep up with most of my movements around the room. At this time i noticed, still sitting in the box was another cable, with yellow, red and white ends and a jack plug on the other, quick plug in to the phone and into the tv, i had myself the ultimate show of gadget. By this time the kids were up and jumping and dancing whilst watching themselves on the TV. Time to sell the digital camera and camcorder now, can't say i'll use them again!
The phone also comes with a host of other smart features which i would love to go into more detail with, but i'm going to run of space, so i covered the main items that you want to know about, and if you are, like me, after a phone with lots of other gadgets and useful toys, this year's smart buy is the new Nokia N95.

  Best Phone Ever!

I tested my N95 briefly before deciding to sell it in order to treat myself to a new LCD tv. These phones are HOT and I've grown out of techno gadgets. Two of my brothers are waiting eagerly for their upgrades and you can guess what phones they're getting.
My review is gonna be brief. I'm not a big fan of the nokia phones, I personally like ericssons due to the mega long talk times the phones have. But from what I have seen of this phone, it is undoubtedly the best piece of technology released in years. I wish I had the time to enjoy a phone like this. Everything about this phone oozes great quality. And no, it crash once while I was testing it. I know nokia phones are notorious for that. But this may be nokia's jewel in the crown. It's user friendly, sleek, good size, and above all does everything you can want from a MP3 player, digital camera, PDA, SAT NAV, the list goes on. I even set it up on my home wireless to check the wifi function. All I'll say is I didn't think browsing the web with a phone could ever be that fast! The video and audio playback are stunning.
So if you're a tech freak go out and treat yourself to a N95. You won't be disappointed.

  The best phone of 2008
Review created: 28/08/08

I love all of the features that come with the N95 8GB. It looks very smart, the new 2.8" screen is crystal clear and the images taken by the camera are unbeatable. The phone can be a little slow after you have got applications and images stored but the phone simply offers too much.

The case isn't very hard wearing, mine has got tiny scratch marks all over it from taking the phone in and out of my pocket but it still doesn't ruin the looks of the phone.

  THE WAY NOKIA N95 WORKS
Review created: 23/08/08

Nokia’s new N95 is a tri-band GSM handset with 3G and HSDPA support. Like others in the N series it makes a big noise with its numerous bells and whistles, not the least of which is built-in GPS and a 5-megapixel camera.

I’ve found phones in the N series to be a bit hit and miss both in terms of design and how all the features are managed. Take the superbly designed N73, for example, and compare it with the over complicated N93.

Yes I know, I know, the Carl Zeiss lens in the latter demanded more space, but was all that tilt and swivel really necessary? Maybe not, as Nokia has managed to drop a 5-megapixel camera with some Zeiss optics into the N95 without all that swivelling malarkey.

The N95 is a slider, a format which can cater for quite small phones, but not in this case. One reason is that the phone has to house a fairly large screen measuring 2.6 inches corner to corner. Sadly, Nokia has not crammed in the pixels – you get a fairly standard 320 x 240 resolution.

Unlike some of the other reviews of this phone that seem to have been done by people who opened the box, liked what they saw and then immediately wrote a review, I would like to give you the perspective of someone (me) who has had this phone for nearly a year and knows what it's like to live with.

The phone looks ok but it's a bit on the chunky side. The worst thing about this chunkiness is that it is not down to build quality. The N95 is a very fragile flimsy phone and if your service provider offers insurance for this phone, do yourself a favour and take it immediately. The back battery compartment panel was the first thing to fail (at the 6 month mark) The ear piece started to sound crackly at the seven month mark and the LCD screen sprung a leak internally and rendered the large screen useless at the 8 month mark.

Ok, is it me thats hard on phones? No! not really. This is the first phone thats broke on me since I started with a mobile ten years ago. Have a look on ebay and you'll find plenty of sellers offering the battery casing panels for sale! Seems this is quite a common fault with the N95

Nokia made a big deal of the N95 having a 5 million pixel camera. So does my Olympus digital camera and the pictures on that are far superior to anything the N95 can take. Then there's the playback. The LCD screen does render beautiful sharp colours when its in video mode and the reproduction doesn't look half bad on playback. Until you transfer to a larger screen IE your PC that is! then the quality goes right down the pan.

I've always been a fan of Nokia phones but after this one I may have to change to a Samsung or some other manufacturer until Nokia start building quality phones again.

In summary the N95 is a bit of a show pony. It's ok if your prepared to spend 12 months treating it with kid gloves but for every day use for your average Joe its probably not going to last the duration.

3 out of 10 for this phone. Nokia, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE

  Better than an Iphone
Review created: 22/08/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've had my n95 8GB for a few weeks now, and without doubt it's the best piece of kit I've ever owned. Not only is it a very capable phone, but i can email (wih cut and paste - iphone take note), surf the web, it has a very decent camera built in (iphone take note again), GPS isn't great, but add google maps to it and it more than makes up for it. 8GB to store music, movies is plenty, playback is very good, the built-in speakers do a decent job if you're at home and and want to listen to your tunes. Video playback is superb, and the battery life is very good. Overall, I'm one happy n95 owner, and there's a couple of accessories that i would recommend for it to increase the functionality:
Bluetooth headphones - amazing, wireless freedom, i have a pair of dells (£15) which are great.
Bluetooth keyboard - one of these brings the email and word processing to life, small and portable I'd recommend the igo stowaway (£20).

Don't believe the iphone hype, if you want a truely universal multi function device, you won't find better.

Gotta be the best Nokia to date - camera absolutely brilliant, music and pictures are crystal clear and with so many extras it's still so easy to use.
Accessories are plentiful, including chargers, in car chargers, headsets, changable covers, zoom lenses for camera, tv leads and PC disc and leads, so you can use this camera/video for everything and still share it with others.
Definitely a recommended product without a doubt :-)

I love this phone - it is so good to hold and nice to use. It is great qaulity - not plastic poor feel to it. I can use it as a complete PDA as well as a phone, web browser, music player and photo album. It has full software support, back up and it links up to my Microsoft Outlook and synchronises all the appointments, notes and to do lists. I can take it to the supermarket holding my shopping list - it is absolutely complete and so easy to use. The 5 megapixel camera is excellant and the 8 gb on board memory holds everything and when it becomes a bit full, you don't have to trash a thing, you just load it onto the computer. I really love it - I would not have anything else and when it dies i will want the same again at the very least and any other option is out of the question. I would buy this phone again if I had to sing in the subway to afford it - (but I would be paid to shut up)!

  Awesome Nokia N95
Review created: 15/08/08

This phone is fantastic. I only wish they made larger than 8GB memory cards but heyho im sure that will be here soon. The whole look, feel, style, weight & performance of the N95 is superb. With so much software on it you'll spend ages being surprised at how much it can do. I'm still finding things after a few weeks. It's the best phone i've had..and i've had a few good ones.
If your thinking about getting one, do not hesitate, you won't be disappointed.
5 tars all round.

This is a good mobile phone packed with gadgets however after using it for a few days extensively it slows down. This is due to too much data and often crashes hence a improvement could be a faster mobile phone. Overall its good.

It is good phone. But you can look at this:

You must charge battery every 2 days.
This phone can have rattling earpiece.
Volume button on the side can be bad. (microswitch can be missing).
Etc.

Sturdy phone with a wide range of eatures and excellent amera. It is not as straightforward as the nokia slide I had before , - it doestake a little while to discover all the features and shortcuts. A high quality phone, loads easily to a computer. I would recommend this phone so long as you are at least a little technically minded

It's one of the best nokia phones at the time being with great camera and route planner + resonable battery life. the only other phone I like after this one would be the I-phone but that is very expensive at the moment + the line rental/tarif is very deer (around £30 a month x 12 month ) .

Nokia N95 the one and only device you need carry about
Review created: 08/08/08

i love the way it has an easy user interface, MP3, 5 mp camera no need for digital camera to be taken with me when i go on holiday., unlike the nokia N95 8Gb you can add memory to this phone so you have more space for your pictures adn music. It has the sat nav (if only i knew how to use it) so far i still have to take my navman with me but when i get it sussed i shall not be taking it anywhere as i will have no use for it. what else can i say if you like the nokia range of phones and hate carrying evrything around with you (i.e camera, sat nav) then this is the one and only device you will ever need. \\(**)//
