Nokia N95 Mobile Phone

I am sure you've read loads of reviews about this phone so in this guide let me point out some things that could annoy you and some things which have been missed out by other reviews.


I got my N95 on Vodafone and immediately upgraded the firmware (on how to de-brand your N95 and update your firmware just see my other guides).
I've now had the phone for just over one month and can say the following about it's components:

-The shell of the N95 feels flimsy and the plastic is not of very high quality, compared to for example the Samsung phones like the D600. I have dropped the D600 many times from about 1.5 meters height onto the pavement without consequences. But if you drop the N95 from that height be prepared to buy a new one!

-The screen: It is nice and bright, with high 320x240 resolution but again it does not have a "hard" glass or plastic coating, but the N95 screen is rather more like a notebook display in terms of its make, ie it will give in when you press on it.

-The keylock feature on the N95 can be influenced by magnetism such as phone pouches/cases that you clip onto your belt which use a sheet of magnets for the pouch flap sometimes. This means that when you're putting the phone back into the pouch the phone will automatically "unlock" its keys (as you've brushed past the pouch flap), but upon closure of the pouch it will "re-lock" the keys as the flap now is closed and yet again close to the phone.

-GPS: I live in London and no matter what kind of weather there is outside it always takes around 2 minutes for the GPS to fix my position

-GPS 2: Both the software AND the maps for this are completely free from Nokia!
While you are using your GPS device you do not in any way have to be
connected to the internet or to a network or anything like that. In fact
you can use the GPS in "offline" mode if you wish.
Use the software "MAPLOADER" from the website www.smart2go.com
There are currently maps for more than 150 countries online!

-While the N95 does have wireless Lan, the internet browsing is somewhat cumbersome as I've experienced that it takes several tries to even load a page after clicking on a link. And that's with the new firmware.

-Upgrade your firmware! The camera takes much better pictures and the menu is somewhat faster this way. For a guide on how to upgrade your firmware if you have a branded phone see my other guides.

-The battery life is not as bad as people put it. With average usage including using your camera and maybe the GPS once, you can go 2 days without having to charge it. But definitely not more than 2 days. By the way, the new nokia N95 battery charger is about the most brittle thing I've ever seen. Again, not very high quality.
