  Definitive nirvana rarity collection
Review created: 19/11/09

This is definatly a must have item for any nirvana fan, it covers the band's work from their first live appearances in 87 till just before cobain's death. It is full of live tracks, b-sides and surprising covers, proving that nirvana had more to offer beyond smells like teen spirit.

Raw, unproduced, highly charged, pure rough energy!
Review created: 16/08/09

I wish that I had bought this when it first came out, but it was too expensive at the time. I prefer listening to these rough unproduced demos and live recordings rather than the polished studio recordings because they are so raw and from the heart.

The DVD is great to watch because it shows the band in action before there were any external pressures of the record companies on them or the stresses of fame. I particularly like the recording of Big Cheese that they done at the office of Rhino Records and the early recordings of the songs from Bleach that they did at Krists mothers house back in early '87. The room is so small that Kurt is singing straight at the wall! The official Sub Pop video of In Bloom is also a nice addition.

The CD's have plenty of great tracks on them too. A lot of songs that I had heard of but never actually hear like Return Of The Rat, Ain't It A Shame, Blandest, Mrs. Butterworth and Sappy as well as many more. Beans is also an interesting tune to listen to with its 'helium' vocals.

All in all I think this is a great box set, well worth owning. I have barely stopped listening to it since it arrived. I had read a lot of reviews prior to buying this saying that the recordings were poor and not produced very well, but I think that that adds to the intensity, and is far more interesting to listen to than the polished tunes.

I would recommend this box set to Nirvana fans that are happy to listen to stuff that hasn't been 'cleaned'. If you don't like the rough stuff, then stick with the studio albums.

  Rediscovering Nirvana
Review created: 31/05/09

While not all the recordings on this collection of music is good the vast majority is. Listening to this was like rediscovering the band again and was like listening to them for the first time again. Songs I had never heard before but were instantly catchy and unmistakably Nirvana oooouzed from my speakers and gratefully into my soul as if Kurt Cobain had been reborn. I fantastic collection of old but new music and a dvd. I picked mine up for just a shade over £10 now that is a bargain for this gem. Long live Nirvanas music.

Brilliant CD/DVD and a must for any Nirvana fan, it is great to hear all of the old classics in non album form like demos and first rehersals. This has such a raw sound that I cannot stop listening to it!!!!!

The solo acoustic track 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' is far better than the version you can find on teh 'Unplugged in New York' cd / dvd - its really good. 'Verse Chorus Verse', 'D-7' and 'Sappy' are quality, 'original' tracks, i.e. not on other official releases and difficult to find elsewhere.

However, the remaining 57 cd tracks are either unheard skits or demo / live versions of stuff you can find in far better musical form on other official releases. So basically, 4 out of the 61 audio tracks here are worth having!!

The DVD is much like the cds, early rare stuff of variable and often poor sound quality. For a much better live Nirvana video / DVD, get 'Live Tonight, Sold Out'; 'From the Muddy Banks of the Wiskaw' is a much better quality live cd aswell.

The booklet is an in-depth, good read and the packaging is pretty.

In summary, I would say this is for Nirvana obsessives only, who will listen to it a few times and then archive it away happy in the knowledge that they have heard everything the band ever did. However, try to get this for under a tenner, as there is way too much filler here to justify paying any more.
