This is a strange film not particularly horrific though there is some violence and the deaths that occur are not pretty but they are not disgustingly obscene as it is rated a 15. It is a relatively quiet film ie that there is not one continuous flow of action, however it is near impossible to stop watching as the story is full of intrigue. What are the books about? Why 3 books? Who really did the engravings? What will happen when the books are compared? This film mixes cults of satanic ritual, murder, mystery, theft, conspiracy, sex, and there is also some humour in the accompanying music and in Depp's lines and unique acting abilities. I only wish that the ending was a little longer to give more explanation, visually.

The Ninth Gate - starring: Johnny Depp

Initially, I bought this DVD because I particularly enjoy Johnny Depp's acting. So, I was blind to the plot and reliant on the performance. In short, if anybody who watched and enjoyed The Da Vinci Code with Tom Hanks, (which was made much later), they should indeed sit back and be entertained by this film. Yes, the story-line runs around a code (of sorts) and of course there is the evil tone running throughout, but this is where the similarity ends. Johnny Depp is a much acclaimed actor, and has shown a diverse ability in all styles of acting. His leading-role as a book dealer immediately lays question to a somewhat suspect personality, but it's hard to pinpoint what is wrong, exactly? A dark and seductive performance throughout! A definate must see! reviewed by: pavloupuss

Don't expect a supernatural classic movie like "The Devil's Advocate" when you watch this one - whilst J Depp's performance is reasonably entertaining, the film suffers overall because of a few lapses of attention to detail - stuff like a hardback cover that is subjected to fire and all sorts of abuse but still looks like it's fresh out of the printers (or "props" cupboard!). I bought the item for 2 reasons - first the fate of the old woman in the electric wheelchair is downright funny; and second the movie does build to a very watchable climax at the end. No great moral messages or anything like that though, it seems that any old dodgy individual can pass through the ninth gate if they get the right breaks!

Polanski's movies are always brilliant-nothing more to say-just sit and watch!
Johnny Depp is like a cream on strawberries in this production. Watch.

Well, it has Johnny Depp in it, say no more, that's the reason I wanted to see it .......he is probably the best thing about the film. As ever, he is looking amazing and acting well but the film itself is mediocre and sterotypically Roman Polanski(and therefore totally guessable, no last minute plot revelations here that you hadn't already worked out ! ). Black magic yes, scary not at all, too many obvious characters and black hooded cloaks and unimaginative incantations....ho hum ... ok if you like JD (which I do!) and you haven't got Dead Man on dvd......which is soooooo superior on every level !

I've seen this film a million times. Its brilliant. Its a methodically pased thriller. Clever, not violent. Tension is high through-out.

I enjoyed this film because it is not very predictable and there are always surprises. I didn't rate it as excellent because I feel that the ending could have been better because after I first watched it I was unsure on what had happened, so I had to check online to find out. Once I found out I then understood, but I feel that it could have been clearer.

Overall a good performance from Johnny Depp, not one of his best but he is well suited for these types of roles.
Worth seeing!

My wife really likes Johnny Depp. We taped the film weeks ago but when we came to watch it, somehow there was only half of it taped! That was the reason for tracking the film down to buy. Glad we did!

  Depp's dark destiny!
Review created: 07/05/07

Thought provoking stuff this! What starts out as just an ordinary day for Corso (Depp) takes him on a journey both physically and spiritually to discover his destiny. With a little help along the way, you can feel the hunger and curiousity which Corso wishes to satisfy. I liked this film because it's about as dark as my sensitive little mind can take, interesting and eerie, yet not grotesquely evil. Oh and he also gets to smoke his trademark ciggies! And we do get a glimpse of the flesh again as well! Worth watching just for that... Pre Jack Sparrow obviously, this is yet another role that he plays so well proving that he is talented and versatile as you just have to keep watching...
Great movie.

I couldn't find it in shops, also I couldn't remember the name of the movie only that Mr J Depp was the lead character, but I did find it online by looking through his movie. Most excellent. Also the copy I bought was new & the postage was very reasonable unlike some sellers who charge very expensive postage.

Good film - Well acted by all. Johnny Depp gives another convincing performance. The plot left me with a few questions though - maybe it was supposed to? Who was the "guardian angel" supposed to be? All the clues were there but should I understand the ending? ....

I really liked this movie. Its a typical Johnny Depp style film, dark and mysterious. Johnny is excellent as always in this. I don't think I've seen him in a bad film yet. I would recommend this DVD if you can get a good deal on it. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I hope this helps.

Having bought this film on video about four years ago I wanted to update to a DVD, it is a very good film with a twist at the end. Any film with Johnny Depp is always excellent as he a fine actor and very good to look at.

Ninth Gate is a masterpiece and it moves with weightless virtuosity. Polanski has contributed so many brilliant, quirky, unusual, visionesque, funny things. It was exhilarating to watch this graceful, lovely, stylish, mature bit of movie-making. Based on the novelo by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, it's fascinating to watch...the casting, storyline, editing, score, lighting, subtle use of effects...in fact, even his composition in the opening credits is interesting.

A masterpeice from a master director Roman Polanski.
