I bought one of these in summer 2009 as something to keep me occupied in my down-time on holiday - and ended up taking it everywhere and having fun with it. I decided to let my 5 year old twins have a play and they loved it too!
Simple to use, charges quickly and holds the charge well. The games are simple enough to understand and it is just the right size for small (and not so small) hands.
Robust (took something of a pounding from the kids!) and small enough to shove in a pocket or bag when not in use.
As a result of my summer fun, my kids are getting one each for Christmas. I would definitely recommend these as a cracking little starter unit for anyone not willing to lay out around £150 for something that needs more of a delicate touch!

I decided to buy one for my sons birthday (age 6) instead on a nintendo DS as they are cheeper and less likely to break.
The good:
Stylish, compact design; front-lit screen; removable lithium-ion battery; compatible with all current GBA games and most accessories.
The bad:
Can't swap in standard batteries in a pinch; no included headphone jack.
The bottom line:
By including an illuminated screen, Nintendo has finally fixed the original Game Boy Advance's biggest flaw.
